Mourning Those Lost at
Tree of Life * Or L'Simcha Synagogue
The Jewish community has suffered a terrible loss this week. An anti-Semitic terrorist entered Tree of Life * Or L'Simcha Synagogue in Pittsburgh on Shabbat morning and killed eleven people, including a member of Reconstructionist Congregation Dor Hadash that was holding Torah study at the synagogue. In the wake of this tragedy, Or Shalom hosted a solidarity gathering to grieve in song and silence.

A message from Rabbi Katie from her blog:
Jews have a unique relationship to the first amendment in this moment. On the one hand, the first amendment protects our freedom of religion. It is the foundation upon which American Jewry has built a relatively safe and prosperous life for centuries in this place...
On the other hand, all too often in recent years, the first amendment has been used as a shield for hate speech and incitement.

Help Feed Homeless San Franciscans This Winter!
Wednesday, November 28 at Or Shalom
Or Shalom will cook for the Interfaith Winter Shelter for the homeless this year. In this program, churches and synagogues in San Francisco offer shelter and food for 70 homeless people during the winter months. Several churches allow people to sleep in their buildings, while other churches, synagogues and faith groups provide meals.
This has been coordinated for many years by San Francisco's Interfaith Council. Or Shalom's contribution will be to cook and serve dinner on Wed. Nov. 28. We will cook at Or Shalom beforehand, and serve dinner at St. Boniface Church.
Please contact Allan Pleaner if you'd like to help. Exact time is to be determined, for now we are just gathering names of folks who are interested.

Double Mitzvah Membership Drive
In the last three months many Or Shalom members have reflected on how Or Shalom enriches our lives, and told others about it. Thank you to everyone who participated and brought new faces into Or Shalom circles, at celebrations and solemn occasions.
We hope you feel that the mitzvah you have done for your friends and for Or Shalom has also been a mitzvah in your own life. Several new households have joined us since the Double Mitzvah drive began. Please continue to tell (and show!) others about our active, contemplative, studious, joyful, sometimes-heartbroken but always resolute community.

Fight for Our Democracy This Midterm Season!
Or Shalom is dedicated to making a difference this election season! Check out the
dedicated election page on our website for local opportunities and election resources.
Or Shalom hosted an evening of critical discussion and analysis of the upcoming San Francisco and statewide ballot.
Included in the link above are the source sheets we used for the discussion of each proposition with a brief summary of the conclusion each group came to at the end of their discussions.
Stay tuned for a post-election gathering.

Considering God Salon
Wednesday, November 14, 6:30pm
The next Considering God Salon will be on Wednesday, November 14 in the Fireside Room. We will gather from 6:30 - 7:00 to nosh and meet from 7:00 - 9:00.
We will examine our social activism and what the impact of growing up and being Jewish (religious or secular) has had on these involvements. Why are there so many Jews involved in social justice movements? We also hope to have a short text on Jewish tradition to share.
The Considering God Salon is limited to Or Shalom members. Please contact [email protected] to RSVP or with any questions or concerns.
