Dear Cool Cat Families,
Happy Fall! Thank you to all families who attended the Family Movie Night on Friday. Special thanks to Danielle Rooney, Sherry Lee, and our amazing Home & School Club for supporting such wonderful community building events.
Now that students are settled into classroom routines, it is important to extend a reminder to all stakeholders about the importance of maximizing instructional minutes as mandated by the California Department of Education. In order to achieve this, we need your help! We have an opportunity to make a huge impact by incorporating these simple strategies into daily routines for our youth:
- Create a checklist for students to use at home prior to coming to school. This checklist could include: homework, backpack, water bottle, lunch, instrument, etc. Ideally, this checklist will be reviewed in the evening before bedtime.
- Set up a routine and stick to it. This will promote student independence and help to minimize morning procrastination (cartoons, social media, daydreaming, staring at cheerios, etc.).
- Eat! Eating a healthy breakfast before starting the school day is linked to improved concentration, better test scores, increased energy, a higher intake of vitamins and minerals, and even a healthier body weight. Breakfast is especially important for young students whose brains use up about half of the body’s energy.
As the Daves Avenue staff are committed to promoting good use of instructional minutes, please know that if your child forgets an item at home and a parent chooses to bring it to the office, the front office staff will not call classrooms during the instructional day. For example, if you are driving your child to school and realize that an instrument was left at home and you have the ability to bring it to school, please make sure it is labeled as it will remain in the office where your child can pick it up during recess or lunch. Thank you for taking an active role to encourage responsibility and independence in all settings. Together, we can help maximize instructional minutes!
In education together,
