"Passing of the Flame - Generation to Generation
"
Scripture : II Timothy 1:3-8
This Sunday
This Sunday we turn to those who have gone before us into that great cloud of witnesses. We spend time looking back on those lives who have influenced ours. We look at today and on ahead as we think and pray about those with whom we too will have an influence. We
've learned from those who have gone before us where some of the learning was good and positive and helpful; while some were not so good, or positive or helpful. But the words of Paul in Romans says it best; "All things can work together for good for those who are called according to God's purpose..." And we see in the scripture for this Sunday of the passing of the flame or torch from one generation to the next. Today, more than any other in recent history, needs the flame of love, the passion of forgiveness and the lessons of grace continue to be passed on to those who are coming after us. The question is, will we and if so how? So we'll spend some of our time this Sunday exploring all of that. To prepare please read II Timothy 1:3-8.

All Church Gatherings

Over the next few weeks and months there are some important gatherings that can bring us together as a church. I want to encourage you to come be a part of each.
The first is this
Saturday, November 3, at 2:00pm.
This gathering is the next offering in Aldersgate's exploration of becoming what's called a Reconciling Congregation. The "Consider Reconciling Committee" has gathered a group of panelists from various churches to talk about their experiences at churches that have chosen to become Reconciling congregations. I've also gathered statements from both lay and clergy who are attending or serving in congregations that went through the process and decided against becoming Reconciling congregations. Our hope is that this will be, not only an informative afternoon, but one where we can ask questions of panelists as we continue through our own process of decision-making.
The gathering will be held in the Sanctuary. We feel that this time of exploration is sacred work. Please come, not only with an interest but with your questions.
The second is also on
November 3 and will begin at 4:30pm
. It is a fund raiser for the kitchen remodel. It is called "Welcome to the Table." It is a Pampered Chef / AUMC "Food Channel" Demo and Tasting event and will allow participants to purchase items that make our lives easier, particularly in our own kitchens. Funds will be utilized to continue to pay off the remodel of our Aldersgate kitchen.
The third takes place this
Sunday, November 4, at 7:00pm
at Bellevue First United Methodist Church. It is a Cluster Charge Conference; a gathering of four of the Eastside United Methodist Churches for fellowship, encouragement, and to hear our District Superintendent share his vision for us as the three Bellevue and one Mercer Island Churches. I strongly recommend that as many as possible attend this gathering. We'll be exploring the upcoming decision in February, learn more about our new district, what is now called The Sea-Tac Missionary District, and hear of opportunities for potential ministry together.
Fourth, all are invited to the annual
Harvest Dinner on November 11, at 5:30pm
. It's one of the few non-agenda times we simply gather to share a meal together as a church body. There are all kinds of opportunities to sign up to help. If you can't help, just come. It's a wonderful evening of renewing friendships and gaining new ones. Tickets are on sale now, and if you can't afford a ticket, please know that you are still invited to come.
Finally, will be our own
All Church Conference on December 17, beginning with dinner at 6:00pm and the meeting at 7:00pm.
It is the gathering where together we explore the past year, celebrate the ministries of Aldersgate, and look ahead at what is to come. It's an important update for all of us who call Aldersgate our home church.
Each of these are important gatherings. Each deserve to be a priority on our schedules. Please consider attending each as we continue to be Aldersgate - a vibrant and inclusive Christian community growing in faith, love, health and service.

CRC Panel Discussion
Saturday, November 3, 2018 - 2:00 - 4:00pm
This is an opportunity for members of our congregation to listen to, and ask questions of, Methodists who are in churches that have gone through the process of deciding whether or not they want to become a Reconciling Congregation.
There will be panel members from churches that recently became reconciling, churches that have been reconciling for a long time, and churches that went through the process and decided not to become reconciling.
Church members can submit questions they would like asked of the panel ahead of time to a question box, bring questions with them to ask the panel members directly, or just come to listen.

Cluster Conference
November 4
There will be a Cluster Conference on Sunday, November 4 starting at 7:00pm at First United Methodist Church of Bellevue. Presided over by our District Superintendent, Rev. Rich Lang, this is a communal event with other Methodist churches in our area to gather the laity
to have civil, open, serious conversation about the mission of the UMC. Everyone is invited to attend. Using a Table Talk format, there will be three movements to this Cluster Conference.

Setting the table with a teaching about stages of faith.
b.)
Opening the table with a Bible study about the content of Jesus' teachings.
c.)
The main course being conversation about The Way Forward and the future of our District (mission field).

Christmas Singers Needed
Singers of all ages and skill levels are invited to join the choir in singing "A Festival of Lessons and Carols", a Christmas Cantata by Hal H. Hopson. Rehearsal is in the sanctuary on Wednesday nights,
7:30-8:00pm from now thru December 5. The cantata will be performed on Sunday, December 9 at the second service. Questions? Contact Jason Suchan.

Finance Report
- At the end of the first quarter of the fiscal year on September 30, our income exceeded our expenses by about $1600, or 4%. This is good news, but it is tempered a bit by the fact that in the summer months we have a reduced program and thus, fewer expenses. If you have questions about the church finances contact Jim Phillips.
- First quarter statements were mailed out earlier this week to those who contributed between July 1 - September 30, 2018. If you have any questions about your statement please contact Wendi in the church office.

The Way Forward Information
Have you heard about a special General Conference in February and been unsure what it meant? Do you know what the bishops are recommending for how the structure of the United Methodist Church may change as a result of the General Conference? Are you curious what it will mean for Aldersgate? On Monday October 22 at 7:00pm members of the CRC committee presented information from the conference and the UM news service and distilled it into a few handouts and slides. Many spent the evening listening, responding, and questioning together. We ended the evening with a short prayer time for the church and the denomination and our siblings and family members in Christ throughout the world.

Club 345 (3rd~4th~5th Grade)

Club 345 is open to all 3rd, 4th and 5th graders and meets once a month on Sunday evening for dinner and a fun activity. The next meeting is November 4 at 5:00pm. Annual Harvest Dinner
November 11

at 5:30pm for the Annual Harvest Dinner at church. This is Thanksgiving dinner, "Aldersgate-style". All the traditional foods will be provided - turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, rolls and beverages - PLUS what you supply as side dishes and desserts to serve 10-12. If your last name begins with A-F, please bring a salad; G-M - dessert; N-Z - side/vegetable. Cost is $6 per person (max $20 for immediate family) to cover the provided foods. Tickets will be on sale after both services starting Sunday.
Harvest Dinner Volunteers Needed
To make the Harvest Dinner a big success and enjoyable for all, many volunteers are needed to sell tickets on Sundays, to prep food and carve turkeys on Saturday November 10, and, on Sunday November 11, peel and mash potatoes, set up and decorate tables, help in the kitchen, serve food, and obviously cleanup. We also need to borrow muffin pans and electric oven roasters. If you can help, please sign up on Sunday's attendance form or at the table in the narthex, or by contacting Patty Ferguson at [email protected].

Fall Festival Update
The Fall Festival was a huge success and lots of fun! We had around 200 people join us for a yummy chili and hot dog dinner, fun carnival games and trunk or treating. Thank you to all who prepped food, worked in the kitchen, ran a game, ran the cookie station, decorated a car and of course our set up and clean up crews. Your service for this community outreach event is appreciated and makes this event possible. Thank you!

Warm Socks Needed
School has started and rains have returned! The need for warm socks touches everyone, especially the homeless. Please leave new socks in the basket across from the office. They will be delivered to Congregations for the Homeless, Griffin House, Mary's Place, Operation Nightwatch and Sophia Way. Griffin House may be new to many in our congregation. Located in Renton, Griffin House serves homeless boys. Imagine what a pair of socks in Seahawks colors would mean to its new owner!
