Planning now for your spring garden

Saturday, November 10, 10:30am

It's never too early to think spring! Local gardener Sieglinde Aigner-Crooks (aka Siegi) will talk about prepping your spring bulb garden for early beauty, the magic of garlic, and the use and benefits of raised beds. Sample delicious, homemade garlic bread! $10 bags of assorted spring bulbs (tulips, daffodils, snow drops, crocus) will be sold to benefit the Friends of the Rowley Library. Bring your questions! Every participant will be entered in a free raffle to win a pretty planter of purple asters for planting in your perennial garden or by your mailbox. Delight in these perennially returning blooms late in the fall when most other blooms have faded. Watch the bees gather a bit more much needed food from these late blooming asters.

Friends of the Rowley Library 2nd Annual Cookie Walk

100% of proceeds benefit The Friends of the Library
Enjoy holiday music by Nancy Day while sipping a hot beverage

While many have experienced a Christmas Cookie Walk, others may not be sure what it is and how it works. This is a fundraiser where we sell homemade cookies by the tin. We ask that our members and friends bake and donate batches of one of their favorite Christmas cookie (about 3 dozen) The day of the cookie walk, we line tables up with large platters of the donated cookies. Buyers choose a decorative tin and walk around the tables to choose the cookies they would like to purchase. This is a great way to get a huge variety of holiday cookies without baking so many different kinds! All proceeds from the sale are donated to fund programming at the Rowley Public Library!
Bakers get half off on the day of the cookie walk! Stop by and pick up a tin, fill it with a variety of cookies so your holiday baking is done! This event is only successful because of all our bakers (you!) who spend the time to bake the cookies!

Notan Art on Display in November

This month the Rowley Public Library is hosting art created by local students from Pine Grove. Notan is a design element used for creating composition in art. The Japanese use the term 'Notan' to describe an important element of design involving the play of light versus dark. Students first learned about positive space and negative space and saw examples of artwork displaying both elements. They then created their own to share. See what it's all about! Their artwork will be on exhibit through the month of November.

7th ANNUAL HOLIDAY BASKET RAFFLE


Winners of the 2017 Annual Basket Raffle

The Friends of the Rowley Public Library Annual Basket Raffle grows every year. Last year's raffle raised almost $1,500 to support the Rowley Public Library. It is time to prepare for the 2018 raffle! Please consider donating a themed basket with a regular retail value of at least $50. You can donate with your family, a club or business. The basket might contain the tools to start a new hobby or keep a resolution. If you are unable to donate a complete basket, consider donating a gift card for our popular gift card tree. NOTE: Because the baskets will be on display in the Library for four weeks, we cannot accept donations of tobacco, alcohol or perishable items. All baskets will be on display (along with your organization's name) at the Rowley Public Library from November 17 to December 15. Donations are due November 13. Raffle tickets will be sold at the Library starting November 17. The drawing will be on December 15 at a reception at the Rowley Public Library. Come enjoy some snacks and see who wins your basket!! All money raised will go to fund programs at the Rowley Library like the Summer Reading Program, Rowley Reads, kids' yoga, author readings, the monthly book club and more!

Museum Passes offered for discounted admission

Passes providing discounted admission are available for the New England Aquarium (Sept - June only), Museum of Science, Museum of Fine Arts, Peabody Essex Museum, Children's Museum Boston, Wenham Museum, Zoo New England , the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum and the State Parks Parking Pass. Passes are sponsored by the Friends of the Rowley Public Library with support from the Rowley Cultural Council and one anonymous donor. Rowley Book Club to meet Thursday December 6 at 6:30 p.m.

Join the Rowley Library Book Club for a discussion of The Fact of a Body: A Murder and a Memoir by Alexandria Marzano-Lesnevich, a different kind of murder mystery. The author believes she is anti-death penalty- until she starts her summer job at a law firm, and starts to work on the case of Ricky Langley. As she delves into the complicated truth of his story, she is forced to deal with her own family history, and the reality of a legal system more colored by our own pasts than we'd like to believe.

Knitting Group, Tuesdays, 6:30- 8 pm

Bring your latest project and join us. This is not a class but we will all help each other.

Yoga with Elissa, Wednesdays, 5:30-7 pm (class will not meet on November 21)

Elissa Shoreman, founder and owner of Buddhaful Souls Yoga Studio teaches this class, which is appropriate for all fitness levels, modifications are made for beginners and challenges introduced for more advanced practitioners. Wear comfortable clothes and bring a mat if you have one. Poses increase flexibility, strength and balance, and help to focus the mind while expanding the spirit. Classes are $12 each or $10 for members of the Friends of the Rowley Library. No registration required. Questions call 978-948-2850

Genealogy Club meets on Monday November 19, 6-8 pm (moved back one week due to the Veteran's Day Holiday)

Interested in researching your family history? Start with yourself! Join us from 6-8 pm (usually) on the second Monday of each month in the Local History Room for Genealogy Club, where like-minded researchers can make use of the Library's resources, share ideas, and make progress on family stories. No experience necessary. No expert on hand, but those who have been working on this for a while will help you get started. Databases available are Ancestry.com (in library only) and Heritage Quest (access remotely with your Rowley Library bar code).

Wi-Fi hotspots available for check out

The Rowley Public Library has two Verizon Jetpack 4G LTE Mobile Hotspots available to loan, which will give up to 15 Wi-Fi-enabled devices simultaneous access to your own secure, private Internet signal. Borrow them like you would any library materials for one week, and take a signal with you almost anywhere. Call 978-948-2850 for more information or to make a reservation.
