CMD-IT Receives $500,000 NSF Grant to Support Academic Careers Workshops & Factors Study
|
|
CMD-IT is pleased to announce it has received a three year grant from the National Science Foundation to continue to organize annual Academic Careers Mentoring Workshops for Underrepresented Participants in Computing and to conduct a Study.
In addition to supporting the workshops, the grant will support a detailed study about the factors that influence the decisions to pursue academic careers. In an effort to increase the diversity of faculty in computing, the study aims to explore the cognitive and contextual components of selecting and continuing within an academic career for underrepresented groups.
The Academic Careers Mentoring Workshop series targets faculty (assistant professors and associate professors), senior graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers in computing from the following underrepresented groups: African American, Hispanic, Native American, and People with Disabilities. The goals of this workshop series are the following
- To mentor underrepresented senior graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and assistant professors about the tenure and promotion processes, launching a successful research program, writing solid proposals, and encouraging senior graduate students to enter the professoriate;
- To mentor underrepresented associate professors about the promotion process to full professor, effective strategies for serving on national-scale committees, and navigating opportunities for administrative positions.
- To provide opportunities for all participants to get to know each other with respect to research activities to encourage research collaborations.

November is Native American Heritage Month
|
November is Native American Heritage Month, or as it is commonly referred to, American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month.
The month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people. Heritage Month is also an opportune time to educate the general public about tribes, to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges Native people have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.\
