Religious Education Classes last week really transformed into a flurry of activity via our RE curriculum! Grades 2-3 learned all about UU Principles and created beautiful Rainbow Principles key chains. According to an EPA report, clothing and textile recycling has a greater impact on reducing greenhouse gases than the recycling of yard waste, glass, and plastic. Instead of tossing, bring old clothing to organizations like Goodwill and Salvation Army. Also, textile recycling companies such as County Recycling have bins around the county where old clothing, linens, paired footwear, handbags, etc., can be dropped off for re-use or re-purposing. "Becoming Interculturally Competent: An Introduction," Sat Oct 20, 9:00am - 12:30pm, Fellowship Hall
The congregation is encouraged to attend this special workshop, presented by Rev. Erica Baron of UUCC Kingston, which introduces the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS), a way of approaching diversity and inclusion work through the lens of intercultural competence. Intercultural competence is the range of skills that lead to effective and appropriate communication with people of other cultures. The DMIS model is based on empirical research and an understanding that we are all developing - and all capable of developing - intercultural competence. We will talk about the stages of development for both individuals and groups, and discuss steps to improve our intercultural competence.

Minister's Discretionary Fund
We are asking Members and Friends to consider making a donation to replenish the minister's fund, which has been needed more than usual lately. Any contribution made by Mon Oct 15 will be matched up to $750. Make checks out to CUUC with the memo "Discretionary Fund." We look forward to again giving Rev. Meredith the ability to help those in need.

The Refugee Resettlement Social Justice Team thanks the congregation for writing almost 100 postcards last Sunday to protest the reduced number of refugee admissions. To answer those who asked: SIV stands for Special Immigrant Visa, the program that offers refugee status to Afghans and Iraqis whose lives are in danger because they helped the US forces (which includes the refugee family that CUUC is supporting).
The Animal Advocacy Social Justice Team thanks everyone for their generous donations totaling of $286, plus the anonymous donor for their gift of $1,000, to help animals affected by Hurricane Florence. We will be sending a check to the
International Fund for Animal Welfare
to support their animal rescue efforts.

This unique 2-1/2-day workshop is offered by The People's Institute for Survival and Beyond, a national, multiracial, anti-racist network dedicated to ending racism and other forms of institutional oppression. From the Minister / As I write this on Thursday afternoon, it's been a day of Senate testimony for Christine Blasey Ford and Brett Kavanaugh. The experience raises my anxiety -- about the future of the Senate, the Supreme Court, my country. Wendell Berry has helpful words for such times when "despair for the world grows in" us.
When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.
Whatever happens in politics, our job is the same: to love; to do what we can for justice and let go of the rest. It might help us do that to take an occasional break to be with ducks and herons -- or perhaps just stroll among some trees.
