Our joy is tempered by the horrific murders of synagogue-goers and wounding of police officers at Tree of Life Congregation in Pittsburgh last Shabes. May the memories of those who died be a blessing.

As a meditation and memorial for the victims of the massacre, friend of KlezCalifornia Leonard Rosenberg created a slideshow, with images of his wife Sandy's Tree of Life painting and her Book of Life graphic designs, with musical accompaniment excerpted from "Taxim" by violinist Jacob Gegna (Columbia Gramophone Co. 1921).

Did You Miss It?

The hottest klezmer dance party of the year happened last month at Congregation B'nai Shalom in Walnut Creek. KlezCalifornia sponsors numerous klezmer and Yiddish culture events throughout the year. Keep reading our newsletter so you don't miss the next exciting event.

Chasing the Changes, a Klezmer Workshop
with Jeanette Lewicki
Presented by KlezCalifornia

Sunday, November 11, 3:30-6:30pm
Kehilla Community Congregation, Piedmont

We will be playing by ear,  listening to tunes and trying to catch the chord changes. We will survey some klezmer forms and rhythm patterns, analyze some written music, and you will go home with some sheet music as well.

If you'd like to break free from little dots on a page...if you're not sure how to jump in and out of the tune...if you want to keep up with the changes...this may be the class for you !

Fruit Geode
by Alicia Jo Rabins

Thursday, November 15, 7pm - 8:30ish
Adobe Books, San Francisco
Co-presented by KlezCalifornia

Jake Marmer's book, The Neighbor Out of Sound, will be published by Sheep Meadow Press, which has also published Paul Celan and Yehuda Amichai. It includes "nign poems" that reference nigunim and the state one is in, while singing.

Alicia Jo Rabin,  violinist who has studied with Alicia Svigals, often switches among poems, songs, and instrumental pieces. Her book, Fruit Geode, is a "ritualistic reclaiming of the body and spirit."
