Nurture and respect children's love of learning.
What's new
at Woodland?
A MAKERSPACE! This summer our front porch was transformed into a room dedicated to building, crafting, designing, creating, music making and more! Collaborative projects and opportunities to share them are varied and bountiful. So far students have enjoyed making scarecrows of themselves, creating haunted house elements, building cardboard forts, programming with lego robotics, and filling the walls with music. We cannot wait to share more as the year progresses.
WORKSHOPS

Reading/Writing Workshop and Mathematical Investigations Workshop are well underway this fall. With much student interest and teacher enthusiasm shared, Woodland's Program Committee rallied behind our eager learners to create additional teacher guided opportunities. Students engage in workshops daily to further support and enrich their Journey of Discovery and Choice Time project work. Workshops are approached with a growth mindset, offer a variety of choices to students, allow for both one-on-one and small group skill building and exposure time.
Why Woodland?

A Woodland education benefits children because we respect them - we take children seriously. Students at Woodland are seen as capable, strong, and rich with wonder, knowledge and potential. Active learning is at the heart of all we do - whether engaging in meaningful social and emotional growth experiences or diving deep into topics as researchers and scientific thinkers. Our environment is stimulating, fun, safe, nurturing, and, most importantly, one that ignites curiosity and fosters a love of learning.

SPACE
Our First Journey of Discovery this year!

The Space Journey got off to a strong start with questions abound and a field trip to the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center in Concord, NH. After a week of exploring the topic, the younger Journey group chose to dig more deeply into constellations/stars, the solar system, and rockets. They looked into why the constellations we see in the night sky change each season, created their own constellation stories, and began gathering facts on a planet of their choice. Ideas for creating models of the planets and building planetariums have been voiced by the students. Our older group worked on individual space related topics. With a common interest in rocket science, they set off to create a series of rockets powered in a variety of creative ways - including balloons, mentos/coke, vinegar and baking soda, etc. The following weeks will bring more experimentation and refinement of project ideas. As the Journey continues students continue to add to their wonder wall of questions and discoveries!

It is the mission of Woodland Community School to nurture and respect children's love of learning by encouraging their natural curiosity and self-motivated exploration. Through meaningful connections children develop a sense of self and others, an understanding of their place in community, and a deep appreciation for the natural world.
