LCUL President/CEO Responds to Recent LBA Attack on Credit Unions
On October 10, Biz Magazine published an op-ed by Robert Taylor, CEO of the Louisiana Bankers Association (LBA), titled 'Congress needs to stop corporate welfare and have credit unions pay their fair share', urging congress to tax credit unions. Yesterday, LCUL's response to Taylor's op-ed was published.

In our response, LCUL President/CEO Bob Gallman reminded readers that credit unions do pay federal, state and local taxes like any business, such as employment and property taxes. Credit unions are exempt from paying corporate taxes because earnings are returned to members, who are taxpayers themselves. Additionally, credit unions exist to help people, not make a profit. Building personal relationships and maintaining exceptional service is our top priority, and our members are fiercely loyal for this reason.

Credit Unions Meet with U.S. Representative and Credit Union Friend Ralph Abraham in Monroe
LCUL arranged a special meet and greet in Monroe for Congressman Ralph Abraham on Monday, October 22 at Centric FCU. Local area credit unions and volunteers spoke on the cooperative nature within the movement and the many ways we help serve members of the community.

Voting in favor of S2155 and HR5515, Abraham is a strong supporter of the movement and what we represent. As we discussed budget, regulations, and more, he said he would be there to help credit unions should issues of importance arise.

Congressman Ralph Abraham, M.D.Ralph Abraham, M.D., was first elected to represent Louisiana's 5th District in December 2014 and reelected to a second term in November 2016. The 5th District is the largest in terms of area in the state, spanning 24 parishes across most of Northeast and Central Louisiana and parts of five Florida parishes in the state's southern "boot." This is his first publicly held office after spending most of his life as a practicing physician, veterinarian, business owner, farmer, pilot and veteran.

Is It Time to Make the Leap to a New, Better Core Processor? 6 W ays an Expert Negotiator Can Impact Results
jmfa The days of floppy disks, dial-up modems and VHS tapes have come and gone, and we've moved on to ever-more advanced technology. Yet many community banks and credit unions still cling to their outdated core processing software. What gives?

Due to a number of factors, many financial institutions may be using core software purchased 20 to 30 years ago. To keep up with changing technology and ways of doing business, a Band-Aid solution has been to layer "ancillary" products on top of it, like online and mobile banking software. But this creates a muddled IT situation that makes it difficult to manage, launch new products and keep up with regulations.

Is that really the best way to go about business for your institution or your account holders?

Campus Federal Leads Workshops at Annual Financial Education Boot Camp For Educators
The Louisiana Jumpstart Coalition for Personal Finance recently held its 9th annual Financial Education Boot Camp for Educators in two locations, Baton Rouge and Alexandria. The Jumpstart Coalition is a national financial literacy organization comprised of financial institutions, non-profits, faith-based groups and more with the purpose of promoting financial literacy across the nation. The Louisiana Jumpstart Coalition is made up of over 50 partners, including Campus Federal, and hosts a number of events throughout the year at schools and businesses.

The Financial Education Boot Camp for Educators was created to build the capacity of educators to deliver high quality literacy to youth and adults; provide the latest resources to inform students and adults on ways their individual choices directly influent their occupational goals and future earnings potential; and provide a foundational understanding for making informed personal finance decisions.

Campus Federal presented financial education resources and facilitated workshops at the two Boot Camps. The Baton Rouge event was held at the East Baton Rouge Parish School Professional Development Center with just over 50 educators attending. The same conference was held at LSU Alexandria for educators in central Louisiana with more than 75 educators in attendance.
