Associate Professor Mugur Geana was a keynote speaker at the inauguration of the 2021-2022 school year for the graduate program in social communication at the School of Communication, Pontifical Catholic University of Chile (PCUC). Dr. Geana's presentation was about the role of strategic communications research and implementation in addressing global public health challenges. Dr. Geana and CEHCUP have a long history of collaboration with PCUC in various projects on public health. The video of the presentation is available here.
Associate Professor Mugur Geana was awarded a $3,500 travel grant from the KU International Affairs-University of Costa Rica Exchange Support Fund for Faculty Research for travel to Latin America to continue his health communication work in collaboration with the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile (PCUC). The grant will facilitate Dr. Geana's travel to Santiago and to Temuco, in the South of Chile, to assist in a research study with indigenous populations, a project developed jointly by PCUC and Universidad de la Frontera. Dr. Geana also aims to promote collaboration between our school's doctoral program and that from the School of Communication, PCUC, to benefit both graduate instruction and research.
A research paper by Associate Professor Mugur Geana has been accepted for full paper presentation at the Seventh International Conference on Higher Education Advances - HEAd'21 - to be held (virtually) in Valencia, Spain, on June 22-23, 2021. The paper "graphed: A Web-Based Concept Mapping Application for Instruction and Research" was written in collaboration with Dr. Ioan Ionas from Waldon University.
Associate Professor Mugur Geana has been elected president of the International Faculty and Staff Council (IFSC) at the University of Kansas. The council aims to inform, assist, advise, advocate and build relationships with KU faculty and staff who are foreign born, naturalized citizens, and/or first-generation immigrants.
Associate Professor Genelle Belmas has been awarded funding from the FY 2022 General Research Fund for a book project entitled “Investigative vs. Mandatory Reporting: Weaponizing Title IX Against Journalism.” She will examine the past and recent history of Title IX and how it has been (and is still) used to stymie professional and student journalistic investigations into Title IX misuse by institutions of higher education. She will interview Title IX coordinators from a range of institutions as well as reporters and editors of professional and collegiate media organizations who have had the law weaponized against them to lay a foundation of current Title IX implementation against which to evaluate the threat to journalistic autonomy. She intends the result to be not only a scholarly examination and interpretation of Title IX itself but also a suggestion of ways in which journalists can protect themselves from attempts by universities and colleges to stifle inquiries into their Title IX problems.
Associate Professor Genelle Belmas and her co-author, Jason Shepard, professor at California State University, Fullerton, will revise their textbook, Major Principles of Media Law, this summer in preparation for adoption during the 2021-22 school year. This edition, the latest for the decades-old textbook, will include developments in First Amendment jurisprudence at the state and federal level from the past few years. Topics include those that impact the rights and responsibilities of media professionals in areas such as libel, privacy, intellectual property, commercial speech, and student speech and press rights.

Associate Professor Hyunjin Seo will be the J-School’s associate dean for research and faculty development beginning in academic year 2022 and will be named the Oscar Stauffer Chair in Journalism. Seo will take over for Professor Chuck Marsh, who is retiring June 30. Congratulations and much appreciation to Marsh for his three decades of service as a respected professor and colleague at the J-School.
Congratulations to Associate Professor Joseph Erba, who has been elected Strategic Communication Chair, and Lisa McLendon, who has been elected Multimedia Journalism Chair. Both will serve three-year terms beginning in Fall 2021.

Eudora Times student journalists win Kansas Press Association awards |
The Eudora Times won five reporting awards in the Kansas Press Association contest.
Chris Fortune (left) won first place for education reporting for his story on parents of students with disabilities adapting to new routines at the start of the pandemic.
Lucie Krisman (top right) won third place for government reporting series on the city’s comprehensive plan. Krisman also won third place for business reporting for her story on the impact of COVID-19 on Eudora businesses six months into the pandemic.
Sydney Hoover (below right) won third place for youth reporting about Eudora families getting creative for a socially distanced Halloween and third place for senior citizen reporting about resources available for seniors at the start of the pandemic.

Lucy Peterson selected as 2021 WHCA scholarship recipient |
Lucy Peterson has been selected as a recipient of the White House Correspondents' Association scholarship. Peterson is a junior from Denver, Colorado, and has served several roles at the University Daily Kansan including senior reporter, news editor, and most recently associate news editor.

The Curve Award for Emerging Journalists is now accepting applications. Sponsored by The Curve Foundation, the award will provide financial support to emerging journalists whose work fosters fair and accurate coverage and elevates the voices of LGBTQ+ women. The award is open to lesbians, queer women, trans women and nonbinary people. The deadline to submit a nomination is May 17.

Sydney Umeri received a master’s degree in digital content strategy from the J-School, which has given her a solid foundation in handling various national social media accounts in her job with SB Nation. “I get a chance to do a bit of everything. I love writing, and I can jump in and write a post on a current sports event and then switch to running our company’s social pages and promoting various blogs from across our network,” Umeri said.
