Register for the Fun Run / 5K and Join Running Club!

Our Prairie 5K and Fun Run are quickly approaching on Saturday, September 29th. This is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year and  we need your help. Please register by going to  www.prairie.run.  Even if you aren't able to make the race day event, your donation is very much appreciated. Every dollar raised by Prairie 5K and Fun Run supports Prairie's many programs such as Box City for our 3rd graders, R.O.A.D. for our 4th graders, and Wildwood for our 6th graders!  We simply cannot run these programs without a successful 5K.

Get your student ready to tackle the Prairie 5K or 1 mile Fun Run on September 29, 2018, by having them sign up to participate in  Running Club. Participants must be registered for the 5K or Fun Run - you can register online at  www.prairie.run.

Running Club meets after school in the Gym from 3:15- 4:00 p.m.:

Tuesday, 9/18
Thursday, 9/20
Tuesday, 9/25
Thursday, 9/27

Please make sure your student has running shoes and a water bottle if he/she is participating. Also, we are looking for parent volunteers to help Liz Beedle with this fun activity (don't leave Liz alone!). Please contact Molly Hunter if you are interested in assisting or have any questions: mollywhunter@gmail.com 913-269-6391.

Prairie is Going Global!

This year you may notice a little international flair around the building because Prairie's Going Global!

Get your passport ready to go globe trekking in 2018-2019. The "Going Global" theme will be incorporated into classroom lessons, educational activities, assemblies and school events throughout the year.

We are not citizens of just our hometowns or nations, "but of the world."
- Socrates

If your child would like to create art that integrates the school theme or if you have ideas for ways to incorporate the theme into the school year, please send them our way. We're always listening! Email: prairieelementary@gmail.com

One Prairie. One world.
Help Wanted! Can We Count on You?

Here are our current openings...
Nominating Committee Members:
Each year, our Prairie PTA elects a group of parents to serve on our Nominating Committee.
This committee nominates Prairie PTA members to fill any officer positions that will be vacant the following school year. Being a part of this committee is a great way to get to know other Prairie parents and to contribute in a meaningful way to our Prairie community. Our 2018-2019 Nominating Committee will be voted on by our PTA members at the September 25th General Membership meeting. If you would like to serve on this committee, please contact Liz Beedle at the_beedles@yahoo.com by September 19th! Anyone who is interested must be a current PTA member.

Poinsettia Sale Chair:
We need someone to chair this annual PTA fundraiser. For the past several years, we've worked with Family Tree Nursery to sell beautiful poinsettias just in time for the holidays. The sale will begin on November 5 with poinsettia pick up scheduled for November 30th after school. If you are interested in helping, please contact Sally Cook at scook@ccvi.org .

Pancake Breakfast/Dinner Chairs (2 volunteers):
We are looking for two volunteers (great role to do with a friend!) to chair these fun Prairie fundraisers. The Pancake Breakfast is scheduled for Friday, November 16th and the Pancake Dinner is scheduled for Thursday, April 11th. Please contact Sally Cook at scook@ccvi.org if you are interested.
Grade Level Parties Kick-Off Soon

The Auction is Prairie's largest fundraiser of the year, and it kicks off in the fall with individual grade-level parties. These parties are a great way to meet other parents in
your student's grade, and they help jump start  the  fundraising process. Save the date now, and start looking for sitters for your grade's party! We still need a party host for 2nd grade and co-hosts for each grade. Please contact Lindsey Rosemann if you're interested ...

Hey Prairie Families!

We are your PTA Co-Presidents for the 2018-2019 school year, and we are really excited to be representing you, our PTA members. We feel lucky to be in a school community with involved parents who care so much about their kids. We are adding a "President's Corner" to the newsletter this year to update you on things happening at Prairie that you may not otherwise know. For this first issue, here are some fun Prairie things of note...
  • Our PTA volunteers welcomed our awesome teachers and staff back to school with a breakfast as well as grab-and-go snacks for them to use on busy days with our kids.
  • Our PTA volunteers provided dinner for our teachers and staff on Back-to-School night (that's a long work day for them).
  • Construction on the new Prairie sign has begun (we see bricks!). There was a delay due to a part needing to be ordered, but it's on its way!
  • PTA volunteers cleaned out the basement to make it a safer space for our students in the event of a tornado (and for drills too).
  • Our students have a voice... Have you seen the purple Buddy Bench on the playground? This was a result of a determined 5th grade student. How about those awesome water bottle stations? A group of last year's 6th graders made this happen.

Without the energy from our amazing principal, teachers, staff, and parents, Prairie would not be the place that it is for our kids. Our PTA is here to support our kids' educations and to make memories that will stay with them into adulthood. Please mark your calendars for the fall General Meeting on September 25 at 7:00pm in the Prairie library. We will be looking at many ways to continue to support Prairie and make it even stronger!

Thank you!
Jessica and Tricia
