A Message From Mr. Robert Goodall
Monroe Township School District Acting Superintendent
The school year is rapidly moving forward as we approach the end of the first quarter calendar in our district. As our Acting Superintendent of Schools, visiting classrooms and speaking with teachers continues to be a very enjoyable experience for me this year. The students are very engaged and actively participating in so many quality-learning activities. Many of our senior students at the high school are actively applying to some of the finest colleges and universities. I wish them well in their search for the best college fit to prepare to be 21
st century leaders and be successful in our global economy. Our teachers and staff are extremely dedicated and supportive of all of our students throughout the district. In addition, a huge thank you to all of our fall coaches and co-curricular advisors at the high school and middle school for their efforts in encouraging beyond the classroom experience and competition as they represent our school community.
On behalf of the entire school district, I would like to thank the teachers and support staff for making Halloween a very safe and fun time for our students. Our
5th Annual MTHS/FBLA Haunted High School continues to be an incredible success allowing for "Trick or Treat" activities in a safe environment.Halloween parades allowed for lower elementary students at Barclay Brook, Oak Tree and Mill Lake to showcase some creative costumes, and our enthusiastic district staff participation in themed costume is so appreciated by the students. A special thanks to our security officers and Monroe Township Police Department ensuring all activities were safe for our students, teachers, and parents.
The Board of Education will be going out for a school referendum this spring on March 12, 2019. The referendum will ask residents of our community to consider approving a combined new middle school / high school addition or just a new middle school. This 2-Question choice referendum is in response to community feedback on affordability and support. Details on the projects will follow soon at public presentations, through social media and community mailings leading up to the referendum vote.
All registered voters in our community are encouraged to vote on Election Day, November 6, 2018! This election ballot also includes a question on the
"Securing Our Children's Future Bond Act," which authorizes the issuance of $500 million in general bonds for the purpose of establishing grants in the areas of vocational and county college career and technical education, school security and district water structure improvement.
For a point of clarity, this ballot question has no affiliation with our district proposed school referendum on March 12, 2019. The ballot question comes directly from our state legislature and Governor Murphy's office. Registered voters in the State of New Jersey are encouraged to vote on the question.

William Levier, a graduate of MTHS and Caldwell University, will be running the NYC Marathon on November 4th to raise money for the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. Monroe Township High School Booster Club Calendar Raffle
The Monroe Township High School Booster Club awards over $5,000 each year to graduating Senior Athletes. Our goal is to increase the number of scholarships awarded each year. In order to help us achieve this goal we are running a
Calendar Raffle.
Each raffle costs $15 and you have 90 chances to win between January 1

Oak Tree Celebrates its 10th Birthday!
Oak Tree School opened its door in September 2008 with 662 students in grades Pre-K through 6th. Through the years many changes occurred including growing student population, staff, and grade configuration. Ten years later Oak Tree welcomed 700 students in grades Pre-K through Grade 3. Happy 10th birthday Oak Tree!
But what is a birthday without a celebration? So in true Oak Tree style we celebrated for a full week in October to the theme of "Oak Tree Rocks". Packages were wrapped in colorful paper and staff's ten-year old photos were put on display with a matching Oak Tree birthday cake. Our glass cases were filled with memorabilia commemorating ten years. Each student decorated a balloon with their family to be strung throughout the school. Pictures of Oak Tree's construction were also put on display. Students decorated and wore birthday crowns on October 9. On the 10th every student participated in a STEM challenge to create a birthday cake for Oak Tree. On the 11th staff and students alike dressed up like rock stars. The finale took place with a rockin' music technology assembly where everyone wore their Oak Tree Rocks t-shirts. In addition, the entire school painted rocks as a tribute to Oak Tree where they will be displayed in our foyer. It was an exciting full filled week for the Oak Tree students and staff!

Environmental Mindsets in Mrs. Hills'
Fourth Grade Class
What's that crawling around in Mrs. Hills' class? This week, the class has begun composting with worms! Earthworms consume vegetation and dirt particles, which are broken down in the worm's body until they exit its system; perfect soil and nutrients for growing crops!
Mrs. Hills, along with her husband, Mr. Richard Hills, retired Division Head of Monroe's Solid Waste Management Group, launched the worm composting bins many years ago here in the Monroe Township. Mrs. Hills' fourth grade students have been learning about environmentally friendly practices ever since.
In addition to the composting, Mrs. Hills' class participates in the "Recycling Pays" program, in which her students collect aluminum cans, crush them, and bring them to the scrapyard for payment and recycling. Mrs. Hills' class recently used some of the funds from "Recycling Pays" to purchase umbrellas and stands for the Applegarth garden area so that students could use it as an outside learning center. Additionally, money from the program was used to purchase tools for the garden lumber for building garden beds and a sunscreen cover for the greenhouse. Mrs. Hills and her students also regularly collect tabs from the cans to donate the Ronald McDonald House. The tabs help offset the cost of staying at the house for the parents of sick children who are hospitalized at St. Peters Children Hospital.
With all of these exciting recycling and environmentally conscious initiatives in place, Mrs. Hills stated that her students have become much more mindful of where they put their garbage and the importance of recycling. Each day they diligently check their classroom garbage bins to make sure that there is nothing in there that should be placed in the recycling bin. The children say that they even check their recycling bins at home too!
Mrs. Hills hopes that her students will take what they have learned here at Applegarth back to their home and community. Recycling really does pay!

WOODLAND SCHOOL NEWS
Mr. Dale, the Woodland School Student Council Advisor organized the elections of Student Council Representatives, Alternates, and Executive Officers for the 2018-2019 school year. The Student Council represents the entire student body and works with teachers and administrators to promote school spirit, sponsor special projects that bring awareness to the school, district, and community and provides students with the opportunity to help others.
Fifth grade Representatives have been elected to the Woodland Executive Board. These students campaigned in the school with posters and successfully conducted speeches in front of the entire school. The purpose of the newly created Student Council Executive Board is to give students an opportunity to develop leadership, organizing, and governance skills. Elections for students interested in President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Public Relations Organizer concluded on Tuesday, October 23
rd
with real time voting on iPads through Google Forms in the cafeteria during all lunches. All students had the opportunity to vote and share in the democratic process of the election.

MTMS NEWS
For the month of October, MTMS is increasing our focus on kindness by launching a Choose Kind initiative. This initiative will kick off with Choose Kind bracelets and posters. Students will be asked to adopt a Choose Kind attitude. MTMS strives to build a united community based on respect, kindness, responsibility, and honesty.
MTMS Science Teacher, Mr. Mark Antioquia was a competitor on American Ninja Warrior (ANW), Season 10, in Philadelphia. "One of my primary focuses as a teacher and as an ANW competitor is to show the strength of kindness. For the past 5 years, I have challenged the students of my classroom to conduct a selfless act of kindness consecutively every day for an entire month and to reflect on the impact that it has on themselves and to others. Through kindness, I have been fortunate enough to create some of the most meaningful friendships to help mold the best version of myself, and as well as become open to many opportunities to learn from and experience. I can only hope to instill that message to as many of my students and people in my life as possible." Mr. Antioquia has also opened an ANW gym to train future competitors for ANW.
MTMS-Ms. Montgomery's 8th grade Computer Science students are competing in the Cyber Robotics Coding Competition! Currently they are participating in "Boot Camp" to learn the basics. In November they will participate in the qualifying rounds and find out where they rank against other middle schools in the state!
The Monroe Township Middle School Builders Club participated in the Make A Wish - Walk for Wishes on Sunday, October 14. The walking group was represented by students, parents, advisors, and staff members all with the same goal - to honor a program that makes the dreams of terminally ill children come true. The Builders Club has been involved with the Make A Wish foundation for many years and has toured the castle. The advisors have attended meetings and workshops led by the Make A Wish staff to better explain the functions of the foundation. In addition to participating in the walk, the Builders Club has sponsored different activities for students in school to help raise money for Make A Wish.
Congratulations to MTMS PE teacher, Ms. Misty Corbisiero and her team, for their win in the mixed doubles tennis team sectionals. Good luck as you compete at the Nationals in Orlando, November 15-18!
The MTMS Science Olympiad Team, led by Head Coach, Mr. Michael Cappo, and Jacquie Hong, Asst. Coach, is preparing to enter a regional science competition in January 2019. Best of luck to all participants! Science - just do it!
Every three years, the MTMS Veterans Committee, led by Ms. Pauline Amabile, organizes an assembly for our students in honor of Veteran's Day. This year's event will take place on November 6th. Staff and students are encouraged to wear red, white and blue. The assembly will include a panel of local veterans who will answer pre-arranged questions by MTMS students. Also, a military style inflatable obstacle course, called 'The Boot Camp', will be available in the Gym for students to experience.

Creativity and Coding in Barclay Brook's STEAMaker Lab
Mrs. Miller's second grade students used the engineering design process to participate in the Ozobot DIY Costume Contest. The contest required them to design a handmade costume for an Ozobot, which is a small robot that follows a line and can be coded using specific color sequences. After coding and testing a "trick-or-treating" path for their Ozobots, they then used various materials from the STEAMaker Lab to create "costumes" for their little robots. Students used 3Doodler pens, plastic cups, paper scraps, fabric, yarn, and many other materials to create a variety of colorful and creative costumes including: an angel bride, The Cat in the Hat (complete with Nick and Sally), a ninja, a princess, and many more. After posing for pictures with their costumed robot, the students then sent their Ozobots to "trick-or-treat" again, while ensuring the costume didn't impede the Ozobots ability to move throughout the path. When the costume obstructed the Ozobot's movement, the students then modified and redesigned their costumes so that the Ozobot could function properly. Their entries were submitted via Twitter and they are excited to see if any of their costumes win the Ozobot #HackHalloween contest!

grade students in Melissa Lane's class put together goodie bags for children spending Halloween in the hospital oncology unit. Mill Lake alumni Johnny Volpe and his family came to receive the gift bags to bring to "Child Life". This project was done to not only bring joy and happiness to those in need, but in the process taught our students a very valuable lesson about how we can give to others and make the world a better place.

SUPERHERO. When you hear this term, you usually envision characters such as Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and numerous others. However, did you know that the SUPER qualities that make these people stand out exist within all of us? When you take away the capes, costumes, and makeup,you are left with an individual who exemplifies the compassion that lives within all people. You see,SUPERHERO is not truly defined by these characters mentioned above, but by anyone who shows compassion and kindness toward others. Here at Oak Tree, superheroes are amongst our staff, students, and surrounding community. How, you may ask? All throughout the month of October (and even beyond through an online fundraising page), our school community is participating in a Student Council fundraiser entitled "Pennies for Patients," where all are asked to bring in any spare change for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. These funds go toward supporting some of our very own local
superheroes, the types who may be truly fighting evil - the battle known as cancer. LLS's motto, "Every hero needs a squad," is proving to be true, and we're happy to proclaim that Oak Tree is becoming quite the squad! Because of the generosity shown through this fundraiser, we are one step closer to living in a world without cancer. And that...is pretty SUPER.
There's a superhero that exists within all of us.
