Coronavirus Update - Polar Plunges
We wanted to share an update about the coronavirus (COVID-19) as it relates to Special Olympics programming here in Massachusetts, specifically our Polar Plunge events.

As we are sure you can imagine, we have been monitoring the coronavirus situation across the state and at the strong recommendation of our public safety partners at the Department of Conservation and Recreation (our permitting authority for state beaches), local police, fire, and parks departments, we have made the incredibly difficult decision to postpone/cancel the following Polar Plunges:

  • Harwich Polar Plunge on Saturday, March 14, 2020 - Postponed
  • Lakeville Polar Plunge on Saturday, March 21, 2020 - Postponed
  • Revere Corporate Plunge on Friday, March 27, 2020 - Postponed
  • Revere Polar Plunge on Saturday, March 28, 2020 - Postponed
  • Pittsfield Super Plunge on Sat. and Sun. March 28-29, 2020 - Canceled
  • Pittsfield Polar Plunge on Sunday, March 29, 2020 - Canceled

We do not make this decision lightly and want all of our teams, participants, spectators, and volunteers who have been looking forward to these Polar Plunges to understand how much we appreciate their interest in the event and dedication to Special Olympics. However, it is incumbent upon Special Olympics Massachusetts in conjunction with our partners to ensure the health and safety of all in our community.

We are working with our local partners to try and reschedule these Polar Plunges for sometime in May, and hope that you will still be able to join us. We will reach back out when we finalize a new date for our postponed events. Unfortunately, the Pittsfield Super Plunge & Polar Plunge will not be rescheduled for 2020.

In the coming weeks, we will work with leadership across the Special Olympics movement and continue to monitor and evaluate developments that may impact our athletes, volunteers, fundraisers and partners as well as their communities.
