How We Recognized Hepatitis Awareness Month
|
|
Hep B United Philadelphia had a busy May!
- We began by joining state legislators and public health officials in Pennsylvania's capitol to advocate for a state viral hepatitis elimination plan! The meeting was hosted by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and brought together many important stakeholders for a valuable discussion. To learn more about our role in the process, check out part 1 and part 2 of our new video series about creating a state viral hepatitis elimination plan!
- On May 15th, we participated in Philadelphia Hepatitis Outreach Program and New Pathways Project's community health fair where we shared hepatitis B information and resources for hepatitis B vaccination and testing!
- Our annual luncheon took place on May 16th at Sang Kee Peking Duck Restaurant in Chinatown. Over 40 community members, students, pharmacists, and public health professionals joined us for updates on new hepatitis B and projects in the city.
- We wrapped up Hepatitis Awareness Month with a free hepatitis B screening at Chinese Christian Church & Center, where we screened over 30 high-risk individuals and educated over 60 individuals!
- At the end of the month, we lit up the Philadelphia skyline with a reminder to get tested for hepatitis. Check it out below!

June is Pride Month! New Resources from the CDC
|
|
|
June is Pride month, and this year marks the 50th Anniversary of Stonewall. New York City is hosting World Pride at the end of June, the first time World Pride is being held in the United States.
While hepatitis A and B vaccines are recommended for men who have sex with men, vaccine rates among this group remain low.
Vaccinating men who have sex with men for hepatitis A is particularly important during the ongoing
outbreaks in multiple states
. CDC has developed the following resources which can be tailored with local information, if so desired.
In addition, CDC has a
web feature
designed to educate gay and bisexual men about the outbreak and the importance of getting vaccinated. CDC will be using this as a landing page for social media outreach connected to Pride and using #PrideMonth and #Pride2019.

During 2019, we are highlighting a unique patient story each month. Our
#justB
Storytelling Campaign is a national effort to bring individuals affected by hepatitis B to share their stories to shed light on this serious disease, decrease stigma, discrimination, and promote the importance of testing and treatment for hepatitis B. If you want to host a screening of the videos, we can help! It is a great way to spread the word and engage your local communities! Email

The excitement in Randy’s family over his son Cody’s acceptance to the U.S. Naval Academy turned to disappointment when they learned that Cody has a hepatitis B infection. Even though monitoring and treatment have advanced considerably, the U.S. military does not admit people living with the virus. Randy hopes this policy can be changed, and he continues to support Cody in moving on and embracing a hopeful future.
