Religious School Classes - Our Religious School has gone “virtual!”

We are blessed to have an incredibly dedicated staff who are working to maintain a relationship with their students. Teachers have been in touch with our religious school students and begun to provide virtual classes as well as written support materials to help them maintain their Jewish learning. Zoom classes are being scheduled independently by grade.

Virtual Tot Shabbat (Preparing for Passover)
It was great seeing many of you via Zoom this past Sunday! So I thought we could try this again with another movie entitled  Hummus: The Movie!!

On-Line Communal Movie and Discussion:

View Film at Your Leisure and
Join Us for Discussion Sunday, April 5 at 3 p.m.

Even though we cannot meet in person, we can still view and discuss culturally fun films like this one:   Hummus!  The Movie

Secret recipes, a Guinness World Record and the power of Hummus to bring Muslims, Christians and Jews together… in the Middle East, America and around the world.
Beyond the mystique and competition, beyond arguments over who makes the best Hummus and even beyond religious and political divides,  Hummus! The Movie   showcases the personal stories of the colorful men and women who simply live their lives and love their Hummus.  (72 min.)

Here is how our communal viewing will work:

1.   Using your PC or laptop, log onto the film:   https://unpacked.media/hummusfs/

2.    The film is 72 minutes long.  Plan to watch it at your convenience.

3.    We will run an online discussion of the film starting at 3 p.m. on Sunday the 5 th .

SO SIT BACK AND HELP YOURSELF TO YOUR VERY OWN HUMMUS!!

Chag Pesach Sameach  - Happy Passover!
April 8-15, 2020
It's strange to think about preparing for Passover while the world concentrates on coronavirus countermeasures. This year, the holiday will be different for all of us, but that doesn't mean you can't celebrate. We have resources to help you learn about and review the holiday rituals, plan new traditions, cook delicious foods, and engage your family in fun activities.

Our Passover Seder will certainly look different this year!

While we cannot be together physically, we can still come together virtually. Watch your email for special information regarding Passover and save the date for our  Virtual Second Night Seder which will be held  on Thursday, April 9th from 5:00-6:00 pm .
We will be providing a simple Passover Haggadah along with fun songs and activities for everyone in the family.

RE: Funding 10,000 meals even though we will not be packaging them!

For the past 2 years we at CSS have packaged 10,000 meals on Mitzvah Day. We had hoped to do it again this coming May 3; but such gatherings will not be possible at this time!

We have decided not to recruit volunteers to go to the warehouse (see below.) But, we would like to raise the $3,000 to package 10,000 meals by May 3rd, the date when we would have gathered at CSS! A few of you have already given us a donation. Thanks!

If you are not struggling financially during this critical time and could send us a donation ( perhaps what you might have spent at restaurants?) ….please do help us reach our goal. You can go on line at  www.shaaray.org  and give to social action or send a check to CSS at 1112 Main St., Hingham, MA 02043 made out to CSS Social Action. Don’t forget. Thank you! Also look at bottom of this page for a way that you can volunteer your time. We are still picking up food from Trader Joe’s to bring to Hingham Food Pantry.
Donate. Volunteer. Receive.
Because of unprecedented demand from New England food pantries, Matt Martin of the Outreach Program has gotten permission from the governor’s office, and the Pembroke MA (where the warehouse is) Health Department, to set up two assembly lines at the warehouse staffed by small groups of volunteers who are packaging as many meals as they can fund.
So far, these groups have stepped up to pay for over 100,000 meals:
Let us add Congregation Sha’aray Shalom to the list!
  • The Rotary Club of Weymouth MA
  • Needham Congregational, Needham MA
  • Temple Sinai and Clifton Lutheran, Marblehead MA
  • The United Way of North-Central MA, Fitchburg
  • The Rivers School, Weston MA
  • Sanctuary South Shore, Marshfield and Plymouth MA
  • Subaru of New England, Norwood MA
  • St Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic, Unionville CT
  • Brokers Service Marketing Group, Providence RI
  • 8th District Masons, East Lyme CT

ps. We also need volunteers to pick up of food at Trader Joe’s on 2 Sunday mornings per month. The food is delivered to Hingham Pantry. Takes about 2.5 hours. April slots are filled. We need volunteers starting in May. E-mail Ally Gall at  ally44@aol.com  if you can do it again or want to do it for the first time. It is easy to do and very important!

Staying In Touch

Members of our “Shabbat Shalom Brigade” have been making calls on behalf of the congregation to our entire synagogue membership. But now is a great time for all of us to reach out to teach other. A simple e-mail, phone call or a note in the mail will go a long way to keeping us connected even while we are apart. Open up your directory and reach out to someone you don’t know. You never know what you will find out about each other :)

As always, please feel free to contact the clergy, Executive Director or President directly should a need arise. Their email and cell phone numbers are listed below:

Rabbi Shira Joseph -  215-499-0190

Cantor Steven Weiss -  781-724-4001

Ellen Bernstein -  703-965-2717

May we all continue to draw strength from one another.

L’Shalom,
