Sixteenth Street Waukesha heads back to school
Sixteenth Street Waukesha staff recently attended the Hispanic Collaborative Network (HCN) Health Fair held at Waukesha South High School to provide health screenings and connect residents with much needed resources. They had a blast with the community talking through important health topics, giving away goodies and providing important screenings.Waukesha is also proud to highlight their 2018 sponsorship of Southfest - Waukesha High School's event of the season! Strong cross-sector relationships are crucial to fostering a healthier community!
Mural Unveiling at our Sixteen Street Greenfield location

Local youth are concerned about the reckless driving epidemic in Milwaukee and sought to address the issue by painting a mural aimed to calm the traffic on Cesar Chavez Drive. The mural, titled "Moving Safely," was installed on the Sixteenth Street WIC/Chase Bank building on the corner of Cesar E. Chavez Drive and Greenfield Avenue (facing the WIC parking lot). This project was generously funded through Potawatomi Hotel & Casino's Heart of Canal Street program.
Sixteenth Street is so excited to host this mural. With the mural, Sixteenth Street is helping to support one of the 10 youth-led community projects in the City made possible by the Heart of Canal Street project --- The Heart of Canal Street project works to serve children in southeastern Wisconsin by providing funds to non-profits, so these organizations can offer services that engage youth in the arts, provide a safe have, promote educational growth opportunities, and encourage creativity.
Thank you to our partners Safe & Sound, Journey House, Express Yourself MKE, and Potawatomi's Heart of Canal Street charitable contribution which helped make this project possible. It is truly an example of several organizations coming together to improve the community.

Complete Street Policy Passed | A step forward in health, safety and mobility

The Complete Streets Policy was unanimously approved by the Milwaukee Common Council on October 16th. The policy was developed by the Department of Public Works in partnership with residents and the Complete Streets Coalition which is comprised of the Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers, Layton Boulevard West Neighbors, Northwest Side CDC, Black Girls Do Bike, American Heart Association, and the Wisconsin Bike Fed.
Collectively the Complete Streets Coalition was able to gather over 700 signatures from residents that support the policy. This is a big win for Milwaukee because it will help increase safety, mobility and curb reckless driving. This in turn will have a positive impact on improving health and education, and create a safer environment for residents, visitors and businesses. A big shout out to Tatiana Maida, Healthy Choices Department Manager at Sixteenth Street for all the work she has done through the Complete Streets Coalition!
Thrive with the Y | Improving healthy living in our community
Sixteenth Street and the YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee partnered up for the first time to offer YMCA services at our Chavez Clinic location. The idea behind this partnership is to improve the health of our community, and one way to do that is through increasing physical activity. From the month of September through October, Zumba classes were offered every Tuesday-open for all to attend. Healthy living is very important, and we are very excited to be working with the YMCA to help improve the quality of life of our community through physical activity. See Chris Rash talk about our partnership with YMCA HERE.
Volunteer Spotlight | Carla Elena, Ophthalmology Clinic Volunteer
"I chose to volunteer with Sixteenth Street because, during my interview, Dr. Jane Collis-Geers (Sixteenth Street Volunteer Ophthalmologist) was highly regarded as a phenomenal clinician and teacher. I wanted to learn and put myself in a different sphere of medicine. The immediate and irreplaceable bond I had with Dr. Jane inspired me to continue volunteering with Sixteenth Street for over 1.5 years. Not only is she a female physician, but a mentor in my professional pursuits. Volunteering with Sixteenth Street has impacted me in a positive manner by exposing me to unique medical scenarios, creating strong relationships, and being a constant reminder."

"Every day we make choices. Living with Type 1 Diabetes has proven to make some days more challenging than others. Every day is a struggle. Every day there is a decision I have to make, but my daughters give me the strength to live each day to the fullest. I moved to Milwaukee from Puerto Rico in 1989 when I was five years old. Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers has been like a second home. I have been a patient for more than 20 years and have seen the clinic grow from one location to many... " CONTINUE READING
