- Local food systems
- Downtown revitalization

Executive Leadership Fellow Update

Happy Spring!
The changing of the seasons represents our progress as the Community Development Society! We are moving forward through the pandemic, investing in new programs, services, research and outreach. This is hard work. Evolving into CDS 2.0, we are building capacity, embracing diversity and equity, providing outreach and supporting our members. Despite challenges, our members have worked incredibly hard and building our foundation and preparing for our conference July 12-15, 2021. Register today.
Membership-Thank you for renewing your membership. We have placed a call to action for all previous CDS members to renew their membership and support the mission of the society. Eric has provided a Membership Development Strategy to the Board of Directors.
Community Outreach- Eric is proud that during the pandemic we have had opportunities to provide ongoing engagement with CDS and our community. The webinars to date have been a success. Our next webinars will focus on the editorial team for Local Development and Society as well as a group of researchers and practitioners who published Beyond the Façade: layering downtown spillover investment in CD Practice. The webinars will take place in the next couple months with more information on its way. Stay tuned!
Support CDS-Many members and other foundations have asked how can they support the mission of the society. We have had discussions around individual contributions, matching gifts, grants and partnerships. This is exciting! If you have an idea of how to provide financial assistance, contribution, possible donors or relationships with granting organizations, please contact Eric and we can work together to align their interests with our strategic priorities.

Stewardship Committee update
The Stewardship Committee, chaired by the CDS Treasurer, is charged with conducting donor outreach, managing donor relationships, and overseeing endowments and dispersal of donor-directed funds.
The Stewardship Committee met on March 1, 2021 to discuss two proposals to the CDS Board of Directors, a proposal for the 2021 CDS Budget and a proposal to conduct an independent audit of CDS financial practices. Both proposals were approved by the Stewardship Committee and are awaiting Board action.
We have scheduled all of our meetings for the remainder of 2021, and we would love to have members join us to share their ideas and learn more about the work we are doing.
Next Stewardship Committee Meeting
- Monday, April 12, 2021 at 17:00 (5 p.m.) EDT U.S./22:00 (10 p.m.) BST

Chapters Working Group update
An ad-hoc internationalization working group is meeting once a month via Zoom to discuss CD across international venues and engage international perspectives in CDS issues. This group is a critical voice for dialogue and opportunity for maintaining engagement among our internationally-minded members.
The group is planning a dynamic virtual international “reception” for the 2021 conference, promoting the conference internationally and encouraging submissions for presentation. Promotion for renewal of memberships and encouraging new members has also been discussed.
The group is also discussing ways to foster more international connections among members for mutual learning and support—linking with the work of membership and recruitment and communications (Ron Hustedde, Lisa Gilchrist, and Cornel Hart have been participating). The importance of engaging members working in community development from private companies, nonprofits and government has emerged as well as the need for ongoing mentoring opportunities (beyond just the conference).
Issues raised about the website, membership renewal, and opportunities for engagement have been passed along to the Membership and Recruitment and Communications workgroups. Programming ideas will also be passed along to appropriate working groups in CDS as well.
Several people have presented about IACD’s work to convene CD practitioners and educators regionally via virtual means during the pandemic. Anastasia Crickley and Connie Loden are regularly joining and contributing.
Recruitment and Retention Working Group update
The Recruitment and Retention (R&R) Working Group is ready to move forward with an aggressive multi-year recruitment campaign. It is important that we work with the Communications & Engagement and Chapters Working Groups for our efforts. Together, we will prepare recruitment letters and follow-up.
Our current targets for 2021 membership recruitment and retention includes the following:
- Reaching out to current members to recruit additional members for lists or other contacts.
- Contacting over 2,000 people who receive Vanguard. Many of these are former CDS members who could become members again.
- We received a list of about 5,000 people who have submitted articles or served as reviewers for Community Development.
- We have identified over 1,100 U.S. university and college educators who are associated with about 100 community development degree programs or community development minors or certifications.
- The Society has working relationships with three organizations: Community Development Council, International Association for Community Development (IACD); and National Association for Community Development Extension Professionals (NACDEP). We need to pursue these exchanges and encourage joint membership and other news with these organizations.
The membership subcommittee is cooperating with the Chapters Working Group for a new chapter in India and another potential chapter that is being initiated by Samuel Onyenswe from Oando Energy Resources in Nigeria.

Lend a Hand - get involved!
|
|
CDS is a membership driven organization. We need you to get involved in your organization. Together, we can build a stronger organization and support our work across the community development spectrum. Learn more about the activities below and join to play an active role in shaping the future of CDS.
Stewardship Committee
The Stewardship Committee is currently investigating options for a socially-responsible investment strategy for the CDS Endowment and will be looking at plans for scholarships and the auction fundraiser. Members spend two to three hours each month on committee business, including monthly meetings. Please contact Bob Bertsch for more details.
Programs Committee - Professional Development Working Group
Programs Committee - Webinars Working Group
CDS membership spans Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America. As a result, CDS intends to form a Webinars Committee to develop globally accessible, interactive and asynchronous (on-demand) programming. This is another great opportunity for seasoned community development practitioners and researchers, especially those published in CDS sponsored Community Development, Local Development & Society, CD Practice, Vanguard, and case studies and books. The committee will typically meet monthly and you should expect to volunteer four hours minimum per month. Please contact Eric Trevan for more details.
Membership Committee - Recruitment & Retention Working Group
This working group is exploring ways to increase membership and encourages everyone to share the benefits of CDS with their colleagues. Membership benefits include networking, access to our journals, CD Practice, annual conference, and awards. Please contact Ron Hustedde for more details.
Membership Committee - Chapters Working Group
The Chapters working group is engaging international perspectives in CDS issues, exploring stronger partnerships with the International Association of Community Development (IACD), building a student chapter, and supporting CD practitioners and educators to collaborate. Please contact Mary Simon Leuci for more details.
Membership Committee - Communication & Engagement Working Group
This working group leads the Vanguard publication, CD Practice, and activities related to membership such as engagement on member needs and priorities. Activities include development of information materials and membership surveys. Please contact Dan Kahl or Lisa Gilchrist for more details.
Membership Committee - Awards
If you have any questions about the awards process – or if you would like to volunteer to help with the awards committee – please contact Michael Dougherty, the Awards Committee Chair, at michael.dougherty@mail.wvu.edu Work would involve publicizing the awards, reviewing the nominations, deciding upon the recipients, and helping present the recognition honors during the virtual conference in July.
