You Meet Such Interesting People, that is coming with me on vacation next week. Which is really my way of saying I'm grateful for the legacy of Bess, who was born on a farm in a small Texas town and went on to become the first woman reporter for the city desk of the
Houston Post (just one of her many accomplishments, among them publishing
You Meet Such Interesting People at the young age of 99). Next month marks the anniversary of her birth (December 13, 1890) and her death (December 27, 1997). She's gone, but definitely not forgotten."

An Evening of Literary Shenanigans!
One Page Salon

One of Austin's most beloved reading series - One Page Salon - is teaming up with the Writers' League of Texas for a special evening of quick readings, slow drinking, and lots of literary shenanigans.
One Page Salon (called "the best literary evening in town" by the
Austin American-Statesman) is the brainchild of novelist, screenwriter, and comedian Owen Egerton. During the course of the evening, five writers will read a single page from a work in progress (goodbye, literary readings that go on and on and on) and answer three questions from the hosts (hello, witty banter with the incomparable Owen Egerton). Midway through, there's a break for eating (Pueblo Viejo, located inside The North Door, has great tacos!), drinking (coffee, beer, Topo), and talking (this. is. the. best. part.). Hear works-in-progress by these familiar faces:

One person from the audience will have the opportunity to read one page of their work. If you're interested, bring the page and put your name on the list once you arrive.

Our culture is preoccupied with speed and output. That's fine when it comes to texting, but the pressure to pour out perfect pages instantaneously will send your muse running for the nearest exit. This is a practical yet philosophical class designed to interrogate the assumptions we sometimes take for granted about what a writing practice ought to look like. In other words, it's a class about that all-important question, "What does it mean to be a writer?" The goal is to help each participant to find their own best writing practice.

Publishing 101: What Authors Need to Know about the Publishing Business

Demystify the inner workings of the publishing business for authors, whether you're approaching your first publication or simply want a better understanding of the business side of things. Topics covered will include how responsibilities are divvied up within a publisher (as well as what responsibilities are the author's), how to understand the terms of your contract, how your books' finances and rights work, how to interact most effectively with your editor and publicist, and much more about what to expect all the way from submission through publication.

Here are some of the free, public Texas Writes events coming up. Each event features two accomplished authors talking about a particular aspect of craft, followed by a discussion about the writing life facilitated by a WLT staffer. There's a chance there will be writing exercises (bring paper and pen) and there will be plenty of time for questions.

If attendance overflows the room, you will be able to write in the reading room (utter quiet, lots of wood!) or anywhere else you like. You can RSVP to receive a reminder email by clicking on the date(s) you wish to attend. Based on response, the WLT may reserve additional rooms.
