THERAPEUTIC HORSEBACK RIDING AS A COMPLEMENTARY INTERVENTION FOR MILITARY SERVICE MEMBERS WITH PTSD
This research project investigating therapeutic riding for veterans, conducted by principle investigator Dr. Beth Lanning of Baylor University, was recently published in Human-Animal Interaction Bulletin. The study was funded by the Horses and Humans Research Foundation.
The research found that the participating veterans with combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder were less anxious and depressed and had an improved quality of life after an eight-week therapeutic horseback riding program. Data revealed clinically significant improvements in depression and post-traumatic stress symptoms in the veterans who participated in the therapeutic riding program compared to those who did not participate.

FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT'S DESK
Each year, the Horses & Humans Research Foundation Board gathers at a new location around North America to discuss the Foundation's important mission and strategic plan, as well as visit with a local facility or group involved in equine-facilitated therapy practice and advances. On October 12-14, 2018, the HHRF Board held its annual in-person Board meeting in Baltimore, MD and were joined by board members from as far away as British Columbia (Evelyn McKelvie, C.E.C.). While in Baltimore, the Board participated in a session to learn of the importance of planned giving and the various tax-wise methods for giving philanthropic support to nonprofit organizations. HHRF's Executive Director, Ken Boyden, Esquire, presented examples of gifts of real estate, appreciated securities (stock), and the methods by which gifts can be accepted by HHRF while also providing a stream of income to the donor for life (e.g. Charitable Gift Annuities).
While also meeting in Baltimore, the Board was hosted for a highly enjoyable reception at the spectacular Maryland Therapeutic Riding Center in Crownsville, MD. Thanks to the great folks at MTR for their warm hospitality and valuable commitment to the field.
HHRF is always seeking dedicated, committed new Board members. If you are interested in being considered for nomination to the HHRF Board, please contact Ken Boyden, Esquire at
