I am grateful to live in a city known for its philanthropy. Tulsa ranks 10
th
in SmartAssets 2019 list of “Places Where Americans Give the Most to Charity”. This fact of life in Green Country enables non-profit services that stand in the gaps across our community. This deep commitment to charitable giving enables the mission of Clarehouse – a free service, available to anyone in need.
Since its inception, Clarehouse has been an outside-the-box solution to the caregiving crisis in end-of-life care. In its early days, many people predicted a care home built on a model of pure philanthropy could not survive. “That’s not the way it works”, we were told. But stepping outside the existing system, we created something that could and does work, and I hear over and over from those we serve that the loving gift of compassion at the heart of our mission restores people’s faith in humanity. We are bound together by our common needs to serve and to be served. Eventually, we all take our turn on both sides of service.
I am grateful for volunteers who value kindness, compassion and neighbors helping neighbors, donors who invest in our care of people at a most vulnerable time and guest families who pay it forward to make it possible for the next family to receive care. This past year we suffered a disaster beyond our wildest imaginings, and the outpouring of support that followed restored us to wholeness. I am grateful.
2020 will bring us fresh challenges, I’m sure. Every day brings new guests and families into the sanctuary of Clarehouse. As we work to continually widen our circle of caring, giving and receiving, we know we are not in this work alone, just as our guests and families know they do not walk this journey of loss alone. We are bound together, and I am grateful.

Recently, we cared for Betty during her last five days of life. Following her death, we received a beautiful card from her family, expressing their gratitude for the compassionate care that Betty and her entire family received.
Dear Clarehouse Family,
It felt like you were family and we didn’t even know you at first. Then, you graciously and with excellence took care of our mom, Betty. From nurses to staff to volunteers you took over when we were the most tired and let us be Betty’s daughter, son-in-law, granddaughter, not her caregiver. You are
so
appreciated (the lunches were so nice – not to have to think about lunch – thank you to these ladies)! We will always remember you. Betty’s Family
Betty, her family and all whom we welcome into our home inspire us. We know the need for our care is ever-growing, and we are only able to provide this care because of the generosity of our donors. Thank you for the gift of caring.

FOCUS ON: Clarehouse Care
|
|
Being able to work at Clarehouse has given me a sense of purpose. It allows me to give compassion and love to those that need it in a very difficult time. Plus, I get to give hugs!! I love hugging, it’s my favorite.
Leigh Pierce, LPN, Staff Nurse
Working as a caregiver at Clarehouse gives me such fulfillment and joy. When I am there, serving others, I feel that my heart smiles.
Priscilla Crabtree, Staff Caregiver
There are few greater feelings than knowing you make a difference - seeing that palpable sense of relief on a family member’s face, when they recognize we are here to lift the caregiving burden and free them to spend these last moments loving and celebrating the life of the one they love. I am blessed by this opportunity.
Julia Roderick, RN, Clinical Manager
For me, it is pure joy to be a part of the Clarehouse team. It is an honor to be a part of the elevation of care created through Clarehouse values.
Nancy Bobsein, Volunteer Nurse
Being a part of Clarehouse is a privilege and yet very humbling. We are at the threshold of someone’s last days. We work to fill those days with comfort for both our guests and their families in a most difficult time.
Barbara Cherry, LPN, Staff Nurse
Caregiving often calls us to lean into love we didn’t know possible

TULSA HEALTHCARE DECISIONS DAY - APRIL 16, 2020
|
|
Advance Directives inform family and friends about your wishes for end-of-life care, but only 37% of Americans have filled out an Advance Directive. Have you? Without one, the difficulty of emergency decision-making is placed on family members during healthcare crises.
To help reduce this burden, on April 16, 2020 - National Healthcare Decisions Day -
Clarehouse will partner with six community locations to guide citizens across the metro area through Oklahoma’s Advance Directive for Healthcare.
Join us at one of the locations as we take action to document our wishes and engage in conversation with family and friends.
