CEE’s Next-Gen Soft Skills Course
Prepares Students to Succeed and Lead in Industry
Alix Lopez ’21, a rising environmental engineer who aspires to integrate sustainable methods into construction engineering and management, juggles a daunting workload. Months before graduation, she has already embarked on a master’s degree with two areas of concentration.

When she heard about the “Next-Gen Soft Skills'' certificate course offered by the Department of Civil and Engineering, however, she didn’t hesitate to add it to her schedule. Taught by different members of the CEE’s Industrial Advisory Board (CEEIAB), the class focuses on success at the workplace. Topics include communication, relationship building, public speaking, business etiquette, time management, interviewing and presentation skills, with the broader goal of building self-confidence, interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence.

“As a first-generation college student, I hadn’t learned much about public speaking, business etiquette or group dynamics,” Lopez says. “Sometimes you wonder: Do I belong?”
Embarking on the course, she quickly learned that she was not alone in feeling the self-doubt known as imposter syndrome – “the fear of doing something wrong, being lost in conversation, feeling left out – and that, in and of itself, really boosted my confidence.”
Gaining the self-assurance to express herself was also empowering. She points to CEEIAB member Maurice Rached’s talk on presentations, with his tips for “reading a room” and “knowing your audience,” as extremely useful.

“Engineers are focused on data,” she notes, “but that doesn’t always translate to audiences. If you’re talking to students, for example, it would be important to break down what you’re explaining in simpler terms. And make it entertaining.”

From Amy Castillo, assistant dean of Rutgers Business School and wife of CEEIAB member Anthony Castillo ’95, ’02, she learned the importance of taking time to socialize, of getting to know people, including from other cultures – all investments of time and attention that reap benefits in various aspect of work life, including better managing conflicts.

“Our goal is to make our students ever more marketable to industry, and we’re always looking for ways to improve,” says CEE Chairman Taha Marhaba. “Soft skills are critical, especially in civil engineering, where graduates interact a lot with clients and the public. Mastering them will also help them become leaders capable of delivering the innovations we need to maintain and modernize our infrastructure. We are grateful for having experienced CEEIAB members and industry professionals who are dedicated to mentoring our students. This has proven to be a successful model over the last two years.”

“I’ve seen some remarkable transformations in the course. One student became very emotional at the end of her presentation and said the course had changed her life, including her perception of people around her,” recounts Rached, the director of transportation services for Maser Consulting.

He adds, “One of the things we teach is that when people contradict you, it’s not because they don’t like you. We explain the importance of eye contact, positive engagement and the significance of understanding their experiences and motivations.”

His lectures are taught with CEEIAB Chairman Rocco Palmieri ’72, ’77 and cover a sequence of professional interactions, from “shaking hands, making eye contact and anticipating questions” in interviews to “dealing with different personalities and getting your team to respect and want to work with you” on the job. “As members of the advisory board, we’re all passionate about communicating these skills to students,” he says.
The course grew out of a discussion four years ago among CEEIAB members. “We were trying to develop other ways in which we could help improve students’ chances for success in the workplace, and asked ourselves as employers and industry leaders what we look for in applicants we want to hire,” recalls Palmieri.

The course debuted in the fall of 2019 with nine students, followed by a brief hiatus in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions. Enrollment in the recently completed spring 2021 class jumped to 20. While registration was initially limited to juniors and seniors, it is now open to all CEE students. They attend eight sessions, which includes student presentations on the last evening about what they gleaned from the program. Although the skills training is a non-credit course, students who attend all eight sessions receive a $100 scholarship from the CEE Department.

“Students are more typically focused on their technical skills and don’t always recognize or understand the importance of soft skills. Our program opens their eyes to the benefits of improving these skills. We expanded the registration limits to underclass students because we believe the soft skills topics presented by our team of experts will help them through their college years,” adds Palmieri, a senior project manager for Partner Engineering and Science, Inc. “I would have loved to have had this training before starting my engineering career.”

“We want to improve the students’ chances of landing a better career and being successful at it,” Rached notes. “We want them to stand out.”

As it turns out, they already do. Two recent graduates produced riveting, audience-pitched testimonies about what they’d learned in the course: a music video on ethics in business and an animated feature on soft skills.
