THE BARRELS ARE HERE!
THE FALL FOOD DRIVE BENEFITING LOAVES & FISHES HAS BEGUN – NOW
THROUGH THE END OF OCTOBER
Loaves & Fishes had its beginning in 1975 when a group of parishioners at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church came together to address a growing problem with hungry people in Charlotte. That first year, Loaves & Fishes served approximately 1,000 individuals.
Today, Loaves & Fishes provides a week’s worth of nutritionally-balanced groceries to individuals and families experiencing a short-term crisis through a network of 30 emergency food pantries located throughout Mecklenburg County.
Loaves & Fishes uses a Client-Choice model which allows clients to select groceries their family is most likely to eat. Clients are able to choose a specified number of items in the areas of grains, proteins, vegetables, fruit and dairy products based on the size of their family. The number of choices is determined by a Registered Dietician to ensure that enough food is available to create three meals per day for a week. Essential to the overall approach is maintaining the dignity of the clients via their ownership of some control and requiring them to invest time in the process. Importantly, it also allows for greater interaction between clients and volunteers.
In addition to being a strong supporter of the Fall Food Drive, Saint John’s has an ongoing presence with a group of 10 parishioner-volunteers under the able leadership of Judie Ratcliffe providing monthly staffing at the pantry located at Galilee Ministries.
THE NEED IS ACUTE!
IN 2017, LOAVES &FISHES PROVIDED GROCERIES TO 76,517 PEOPLE, 46% OF WHICH WERE CHILDREN!
THE CLIENT’S AVERAGE INCOME WAS $1,099.
PLEASE GET BEHIND THE FOOD DRIVE AND HELP US TOP LAST YEAR’S TOTAL OF OVER 3,500 POUNDS!

Loaves & Fishes
The barrels are in the church for you to adopt and fill with food for our hungry neighbors. BUT, don’t forget to fill the little red wagon each Sunday. That food is taken weekly to the pantry at Galilee. We feed around 500 people each month. Their biggest need is spaghetti sauce, grits, instant potatoes, canned fruits, ranch dressing, coffee and hygiene products.Thank you for your continued generosity.

TO ALL WOMEN OF ST. JOHN'S - AN INVITATION TO JOIN THE DAUGHTERS OF THE KING
Do you have a committed, close relationship with Jesus in your life, are you dedicated to daily Prayer, committed to church and community service, and an active Evangelist? If you answered ‘yes’, or are curious about learning more, The Daughters of The King want to talk with you!
We are recruiting like-minded women, and women who wonder what it’s all about, to become new members. Consider giving Nancy Nye (
nancyfnye@gmail.com
) or any of the other Daughters, a shout. All Daughters wear a distinctive silver cross as evidence of their vows.
We would love to share a cup of coffee and tell you about being a Daughter of the King! A period of four Study and Discernment sessions begins at 9:30 on Saturday, September 22, 2018 in room 201.

HOLY EUCHARIST CLASSES FOR CHILDREN
Holy Eucharist classes are being offered to Second and Third Grade students next month. The classes will be on October 7, 14, 21, and 28 during Sunday School (10:15-11:00am). This class is a great opportunity for children to learn and explore the meaning and mystery surrounding Holy Eucharist. Students completing the classes will be recognized during the worship services on November 11. Third Graders who completed a Holy Eucharist class when they were younger are encouraged to attend this class as the content will be geared toward older students.
