President's Message
Greetings!

Celebrate CVOA ~ 20th in 2020

The loons have already begun gathering in social rafts on the lake to consider their winter plans. Just yesterday I watched 10 of them enjoying the last of these summer days, slowly paddling down the lake together. In just a few short months, winter will be here . . . Hurrah! Whenever my husband posts comments like this on FB he gets slammed with nasty comments from (winter) haters. I know I have many winter-loving readers here, so I can write this, knowing it will be received with smiles and thumbs-ups as we begin making our winter plans.

With winter comes CVOA’s busy schedule of snowshoe treks, cookie swaps, ski trips and much more. This year there will be an extra-special event that you will want to put on your calendars now. CVOA will be celebrating 20 years of existence on Saturday, January 18, 2020 in the King Pine Room at Sugarloaf with our event of the season, Celebrate CVOA ~ 20th in 2020!

The event is still in the planning stages but will be a full evening of dinner, a program, music and lots and lots of celebrating. More details will be included in the October newsletter along with the RSVP information. We would love to have a huge turnout to pay tribute to our founders of this great organization and all that it has accomplished in the past twenty years. I hope you will plan to join us!

Of course, before winter gets here, we will have many beautiful fall days to enjoy. Please read the articles in this newsletter about upcoming events - a volunteer opportunity at a Burnt Mtn. Trail Clean-up on September 21, a lunch hike to Stratton Brook Hut on Saturday, September 28 th & CVOA Board & Member lunch and meeting on Sunday, September 29 th and CVOA at Sugarloaf’s annual Homecoming Weekend, October 11-14.

Just like the loons on Green Lake, I am looking forward to the crisp cool days of fall and making plans for the winter ahead. As we close up our lake house and head back to the mountains in September, the summer will become just a fond memory - but the winter lies ahead with great potential.

All the best,
Bonnie

Future Events & Adventures
A note from Patti Johnston:
Upcoming Adventure opportunities!
*September 21, Burnt Mountain Trail Work - see Dave Cota’s request! A great way for CVOA to help care for our favorite adventure land!

*September 28, hike to Stratton Brook Hut for lunch. A great way to experience the fall in Carrabassett Valley, reconnect with fellow CVOAers, and a great lunch!

*Oct. 12-13 Homecoming, stay tuned for adventure opportunities that weekend as well as taking a shift at the CVOA booth. It is always a chance to put a face with our great group and encourage new members to join us.

Hope your summer has been as good as the weather was! Although we yearn for it to last a bit longer, Farmer’s Almanac says we are in for another snowy winter! Woohoo!! Bring on the winter adventures!

~ Patti
Burnt Mountain Trail Work (badly needed)
Saturday, September 21
rain date the 22nd
Dave Cota, CV Town Manager, hiked up the Burnt Mountain trail on Sunday and it is in need of significant trail work. Sugarloaf has only a two person crew that occasionally does work on the trail; apparently they are not in a position to do what needs to be done.

On Saturday, September 21 , Dave will spearhead the effort to get the trail back in the shape it deserves. Dave wrote “it is in bad shape and is well used.” Please consider giving back to our outdoor community by volunteering to help.

Dave hopes to have 20 volunteers to work from 9am to 2:30pm. Sugarloaf will send their crew of two to cut down blowdowns and do other chainsaw work. Volunteers should bring hand brush cutters if possible, and gloves. Workers will tackle brush cutting on the trail, and some will work to redefine the top one-mile alpine zone trail (reset carrions and paint blazes).

Meet at 9:00 am sharp in either the Burnt Mtn Road or Bigelow Mtn Road condo parking areas on the east side of the mountain. The condo roads are off Mountainside Road at Sugarloaf.

And . . . Sugarloaf has agreed to provide free beer and appetizers from 3 to 5 in the hotel to the volunteers who work that day.

For more information, or to sign up, email Dave Cota at the Town Office at towncvtm@roadrunner.com.
Stratton Brook Hike and Lunch
Saturday, September 28
Join us on Saturday, September 28 for a hike up to Stratton Brook Hut for lunch. We will meet at 10:30 at the Stratton Brook Trailhead Parking area. Please RSVP to Patti Johnston, cvoa.president@gmail.com so she can give the hut staff a count for lunch. In the case of inclement weather, Patti will email people if the hike is cancelled.
Quarterly Board/Member Meeting & Lunch
Sunday, September 29
On Sunday, September 29 we will hold our quarterly board and member meeting at the CV Town Office Park/Pavilion at 1 o'clock, rain or shine.

At noon, there will be lunch fixings for sandwiches, salads and desserts. All CVOA members are welcome!

Help Wanted!
Homecoming Weekend at Sugarl0af
October 12th and 13th at our booth
CVOA is looking for a few friendly volunteers to help us at our booth on Homecoming Weekend. It’s a great chance to see old friends, share your great CVOA experiences in the outdoors, answer questions and sign up new members.

The booth is open from 9 am to 5 pm Saturday and 9 am to 4 pm Sunday. The shifts are typically two hours for 2 people; 9-11; 11-1; 1-3 and 3-5. Sunday’s shift will include help with taking down and packing up the booth at 4:00pm.

If you are willing to volunteer a couple hours to chat with people about your experiences with CVOA, please contact Mark Curtis at cvoa.vicepresident@gmail.com or call him at 207-441-9532. It is a fun time to be involved, catch up with your CVOA friends and promote our great organization!
