Greetings!
Question

Thinking specifically about the safety of riders who are more vulnerable such as those with physiological injuries (e.g. like myself, having previously had spinal surgery); more mature riders and young children in the context of starting horses.

Answer

We will now move on to segments we will name Preparation. This, the second segment, stands my hair on end and causes my skin to crawl. No one, even slightly meeting the description you have outlined here should ever be the first rider for any horse no matter the preparation or the apparent attitude of the horse.

To read your words about your own physical vulnerabilities as though you would consider being the first rider on the horse is absolutely bone chilling. Under no circumstance could I ever allow anyone even slightly fitting the descriptions you have outlined here would be asked by me to be a first, second, third or even fourth rider. Let’s end this segment with those words etched indelibly.

Sincerely,

 EVENT: THE MOVEMENT 2019

I thoroughly enjoyed this 2 day event. It was my first time experiencing Monty Roberts in person, and I appreciated the balance of topics between a deeper understanding of ourselves as humans, cultivating a healthier awareness and way of being with ourselves and one another, and our understanding and relationship with horses in service to the horses' health and quality of experience.

I have been a Life & Wellness Coach for over 20 years now, supporting others (and myself) in living a conscious, connected, healthy, meaningful life. My focus has been working with trauma, teaching emotional integration, and somatic work. It all stems from a space of unconditional love and presence with our mind/body/soul experience. And I have to say, that I had a powerful epiphany after watching Monty and his team work with the horses, and the Join-Up process. It has changed the depth and quality of my presence and connection with myself, my body, and my own understanding of how I engage with life.

I also realized that I had a respect and compassion for the horses that I wasn't allowing in my own relationship with myself and my body. Within my empathy for the horses, it opened an empathy for my own humanness, allowing for a deeper connection. And later, when I showed up for myself and allowed my body to "join-up" with me, instead of trying to manipulate or lead it, that my nervous system relaxed, and I more naturally opened more fully into myself and my experience. It is difficult to explain in words, but I look forward to learning and exploring more, and deepening my relationship within myself, others, horses, and life itself :-)

Overall, it was a wonderful experience, and I am grateful to the Roberts Family and Team for offering this powerful, and important event. Thank you so very much.

MONTY'S CHALLENGE

Test yourself each week as I challenge you to answer the question below. I mean this. Sit down and write an answer. Don't wait for my answer next week. If you have been reading my Weekly Questions and Answers for the last six months, you should be in a position to do this. Send your answer to my team at:  askmonty@montyroberts.com

Why should you bother? Because it will help you focus. There is probably a comparable question in your life that needs answering... or will be. If you can gain insight into how to go about answering a practical question that is loosely related to your problem, this exercise will help you answer your nagging question. Then read my answer. I want all of my students to learn to be better trainers than me.That's good for you and good for horses!

NEXT WEEK'S QUESTION

Common sense tell us that there are certain breeds/temperaments that would be better suited to these riders, even having taken this into consideration, are there any extra measures you like to put in place when starting horses when you know your riders will be little more delicate or vulnerable?
