Psalm 8: 3-4
“When I look at the heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
what are human beings that you are mindful of them,
mortals that you care for them?”
Stargazing is one of my favorite hobbies. There’s just something so majestic about the night sky on a clear night that brings me a deep sense of peace and some much needed perspective. In the craziness of everyday life, I think we often overlook the wonder and majesty of things all around us. How often do we stop to appreciate the warmth of the sun on our back, the symphony of a thunderstorm, or the smell of freshly cut lawns and flowers in bloom? Not often enough, I think. God has given us a beautiful creation to enjoy and care for, and when we take the time to truly appreciate the splendor surrounding us we can draw closer to God and often discover a sliver of peace when all seems crazy.
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the beauty of your creation. Help us to take time out from the hustle and bustle of our daily lives to appreciate the wonder that surrounds
around us. Remind us that we are made with the same majesty and splendor as the moon and stars.
In your holy name we pray, Amen.

Summer Movie Night
Friday, J
une 7 @ 7pm in Room 316
Bring a snack to share and your lawn chair and join us for the movie,
The Wife
.
After nearly forty years of marriage, Joan and Joe Castleman (Glenn Close and Jonathan Pryce) are complements. Where Joe is casual, Joan is elegant. Where Joe is vain, Joan is self-effacing. And where Joe enjoys his very public role as Great American Novelist, Joan pours her considerable intellect, grace, charm, and diplomacy into the private role of Great Man's Wife. Joe is about to be awarded the Nobel Prize for his acclaimed and prolific body of work. Joe's literary star has blazed since he and Joan first met in the late 1950. THE WIFE interweaves the story of the couple's youthful passion and ambition with a portrait of a marriage, thirty-plus years later--a lifetime's shared compromises, secrets, betrayals, and mutual love.
Discussion following the movie will be led by Geri From.

Summer Reads in OneSent
Women Rowing North by Mary Pipher
|
Women growing older contend with ageism, misogyny, and loss. Yet as Mary Pipher shows, most older women are deeply happy and filled with gratitude for the gifts of life. Their struggles help them grow into the authentic, empathetic, and wise people they have always wanted to be. In Women Rowing North, Pipher offers a timely examination of the cultural and developmental issues women face as they age. Drawing on her own experience as daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, caregiver, clinical psychologist, and cultural anthropologist, she explores ways women can cultivate resilient responses to the challenges they face. "If we can keep our wits about us, think clearly, and manage our emotions skillfully," Pipher writes, "we will experience a joyous time of our lives. If we have planned carefully and packed properly, if we have good maps and guides, the journey can be transcendent."
