Economic Development Awards: Town of Paradise Wins Big!
The Economic Developers Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (EDANL) presented their 2018 Economic Development Awards of Excellence at the recent EDANL Conference held in Deer Lake.  The Town of Paradise was proud to accept the Community Project Award and Marketing Award during the ceremony.

The Community Project Award was received for a Business Retention and Expansion and Firmographics Project, which involved surveying more than 80 local businesses over a six week span. Information from this survey supported the launch of a Business Directory.

The Marketing Award was received for our Just Imagine Retail Opportunities Brochure, which involved the collection of relevant demographic data. The Town used this brochure and information to secure key retail investments.

These two projects support the implementation of Town's Economic Development Strategy, and help support the strategic objectives and policies contained in the Economic Prosperity section of the Town of Paradise Municipal Plan "Imagine Paradise".
Youth Ventures Program
Youth Ventures is a program that encourages youth between the ages of 12-29 to start up and run their own summer businesses. The program helps youth create business plans, promote and advertise their summer business, and provides financial training, resources and business counselling.

The Town of Paradise supports the Youth Ventures program in its goal to help empower our young entrepreneurs. Through waiving the fees for permits and licenses for Youth Venture participants, the Town looks to foster entrepreneurship in our youth and help shape them into the leaders of tomorrow. Open Air Burning and Outdoor Fireplace Safety
With summer just around the corner the St. John`s Regional Fire Department (SJRFD) is reminding residents to stay safe during Open Air Burning and while using Chimineas or Outdoor Fireplaces.

If you plan on cleaning up around your property by burning brush and yard debris, please be aware that a permit is required. You must make sure the way you clear unwanted brush and vegetation is safe - for you, your home, your neighbors, and the surrounding area. For complete information, including the required conditions to receive a permit, please see the full SJRFD News Release.

If you own a chiminea or outdoor fireplace or plan on purchasing one, please be sure to review all outdoor safety notices issued by the SJRFD. This is especially important if you're new to using a fire pit. Please ensure these devices are operated in a safe and respectful manner; this means only using them when wind speeds are less than 25 km per hour, and ensuring smoke does not cause an annoyance to neighbours. Please read the full SJRFD News Release for a full list of requirements and safety tips for chiminea or outdoor fireplaces.

If you have any questions about these SJRFD notices, please email or call (709) 576-3905. Have a fun and safe summer!

New Strategic Plan - Share Your Ideas
This year, the Town of Paradise is developing a new multi-year strategic plan. The Town will be working with Twells Consulting on this project and they will lead the engagement process and developing the plan. It will provide guidance, direction and measurable goals to the Town, for the next three years, through to 2022.

In developing this plan, we want it based on input from our residents, businesses, and community. We want to hear from you about the Paradise you envision and the strategic direction to guide the Town. The new Strategic Plan is intended to be a clear action plan that will strengthen the Town's overall vision and goals and guide Council as we make decisions for the betterment of our residents.
The public consultation session is scheduled for June 20 at 7 pm in the Paradise Double Ice Complex. Further details will be available on the Town website early next week. Come share your views about creating "my Paradise"!
