Pilot Program Announced as Alternative to the 10-Year ABFM Exam
The longitudinal assessment pilot is an alternative to the one-day examination that will allow American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) Diplomates to complete their 2019 examination requirement in a new way.  Family Medicine Certification Longitudinal Assessment (FMCLA) aligns with adult learning principles and is coupled with modern technology to promote enduring learning, retention and transfer of knowledge. This pilot is limited to Diplomates who are currently certified and are in the tenth year of certification due to end December 31, 2019.  You can find more information about the FMCLA pilot on the ABFM website.
Wheat  Wants You for Academy Advocate
The MAFP is building a network of legislative contacts for our key legislators.  These family docs will be identified as our "Academy Advocates" and will receive alerts asking them to contact lawmakers about health-related issues.   We will roll out the program next week so if you have a relationship with a state or federal legislator, please sign up.

FAMDOCPAC: Check your mailbox for information on FamDocPAC, the MAFP's political action committee. MAFP President Dr. David Wheat of Clinton penned a letter to ALL active members on the subject of advocacy. Physicians are invited to donate to the PAC as we are fast approaching a year in which all statewide and legislative positions are up for grabs. Help make family medicine's voice stronger!
Latorre, Family Physician, Takes Over as DOM Medical Director
Latorre
MAFP member has accepted the full-time job of Medical Director for the Mississippi Division of Medicaid (DOM).

"In my new position I look forward to working with the MAFP so that every Medicaid beneficiary has access to a physician-led team," said Carlos Latorre, MD, FAAFP, a family physician since 2008. A board member since 2014, he was elected secretary of the Academy this past July.

Dr. Latorre will take over the position on Nov. 26, and he  will be the first full-time Medical Director. It was most recently held by interim director Dr. Jason Dees of New Albany, also a family physician.

Asked about his new role, he said he is looking forward to breaking down barriers to care. "I look forward to hearing from all members of the care team on ways to improve the lives of Medicaid beneficiaries. Family physicians form the backbone of the care team for our beneficiaries and consistent dialogue with every family physician will help me be a better medical director."

Dr. Latorre earned his medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine and completed residency at UMMC Family Medicine Residency Program. He practiced medicine in Vicksburg after residency and for the past 12 months has served as a Primary Care Lead in Arlington, Texas, at the Veteran Health Administration, Veteran Integrated System Network (VISN) 17.

Support #GivingTuesday, Nov. 27

Following Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the #GivingTuesday movement began in 2012 as a way to unite us all in a day of generosity during the season of giving. By making a gift to the MAFP Foundation this #GivingTuesday, YOU can make a difference.  Donations to the Foundation support:
  • the annual Spring Fling in Jackson that showcases family medicine to medical students and residents
  • Scholarships for high school students
  • Financial awards for medical students to attend MAFP Annual Meeting or national conferences hosted by AAFP and ACOFP
  • Externships for medical students to work with the UMMC Family Medicine Department each summer
  • and more!

Make your gift and encourage others to do the same during #GivingTuesday on November 27!
