ANNOUNCING A NEW SEASON OF TEXAS WRITES!
It's that time of year again and we're happy to announce the first several events on our 2018/2019 Texas Writes schedule of half-day writing workshops.
Free and open to the public, these presentations take place in rural communities across Texas, so chances are we'll be visiting a library near you in the coming months. We'll be in East Texas, Southwest Texas, near the Texas panhandle, and so far out west that we'll be able to see New Mexico through our windshield.
Each event features two accomplished authors talking about a particular aspect of craft, followed by a discussion about the writing life facilitated by a WLT staffer. There's a chance there will be writing exercises (bring paper and pen) and there will be plenty of time for questions.

Book Promotion on a Shoestring Budget

This class will explore a variety of methods for generating book publicity at minimal to no cost. From the pre-publication process to navigating social media as an author, we'll discuss numerous ways to maximize word of mouth before and after publication. The course will also examine how to work with your publisher to receive reviews and other media coverage, smart approaches to organizing a book tour, which promotional efforts are often a waste of time and money,
how to establish an online presence as an author, and how to prepare for publication day.
Registration closes Wednesday, September 26, at 5 p.m. CST. Everyone who registers will have access to the class recording for one week

Memoir in Miniature: The Art of the Personal Essay

Learn the art of the personal essay through
in-depth, guided discussion of models by contemporary writers and
exercises designed to help you craft a 500 word+ mini personal essay (also known as "flash" nonfiction) that you can use as the basis for (1)
a more substantial essay (2500+ words), suitable for journal submission or
(2) the seed for a book-length project.
The class is intended for writers of all levels, from beginner to advanced, and will explore how to sift through story material to find those all-important tension points that make people take notice, grab readers by the throat from the start with compelling openings and "shoot straight from the gut" to avoid the narrative clichés guaranteed to turn readers off.
Registration closes on Thursday, September 27, at midnight. Walk-in registrations will be accepted, as space allows.

This class is also part of the Memoir Essentials Class Package, which
includes three classes at the normal member rate of $49/class (or $147 total), plus a
complimentary online class, a $49 value, good for one online class registration between now and December 31, 2018.

Publications
Sue Meredith Cleveland and Dixie Lee Evatt (Austin) will launch Digging Up the Dead October 20 at Book People, 603 North Lamar, Austin. Sue and Dixie write under the pen name Meredith Lee. The latest thriller is the second in the Crispin Leads Mystery series. For more information, click here.

Chick Morgan (Wimberley) is happy to announce the second Descanso Creative Passage International Writers' Retreat. Volunteer to help out at the Writers' League's booth at the upcoming Texas Book Festival!

We love the
Texas Book Festival, and we're excited to once again participate as a festival exhibitor! We're in search of WLT members to work as volunteers at our booth.
This is a great opportunity to learn more about the Texas literary community and to meet the writers and readers of Texas! (Not to mention spend some quality time with your friendly staff members.)
At our booth (Tent 3, Booths 313-314), we have one table with information about WLT programming, and one table where members of WLT who are authors may promote their books to the general public. We're looking for volunteers to work two-hour shifts between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on both days of the festival. Duties will include speaking to festival attendees about upcoming WLT events and membership benefits; signing up new members; and managing the schedule of authors promoting their books.
