HOWNW.com Honor’s Native American Heritage Month
What began at the turn of the 20th century as an effort to gain a day of recognition for the significant contributions the first Americans made to the establishment and growth of the United States of America, resulted in a Presidential proclamation declaring the entire month for that purpose. Since 1994, similar proclamations, under variants on the name (including “Native American Heritage Month” and “National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month”) have been issued each year since.
November is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people. Heritage Month is also an opportune time to educate the general-public about tribes, to raise a general awareness of the unique challenges Native people have faced both historically and, in the present. Including the ability to attain homeownership.
Congress established the
Section 184 Indian Housing Loan Guarantee Program
(Section 184 IHLGP) in 1992. The program is designed to offer home ownership, property rehabilitation, and new construction opportunities for Native American individuals and families of eligible tribes wanting to own a home on trust land or land located in an approved Indian or Alaska Native area. Section 184 IHLGP is available to any member of a federally recognized Tribe. In Oregon this loan can be used anywhere in the state.
