Staff Notes

MINUTE FOR MUSIC
It was a powerful, joyful experience to have so many of us singing UU hymns on stage at the NAACP Community Celebration on Sat., May 25th! And while singing in the face of injustice and hatred may seem futile, I know a true story of a "Singing Revolution" in which a nation's people peacefully overthrew an oppressive government. It was after World War II when the U.S.S.R. occupied the Baltic nation of Estonia (where my sister-in-law's parents were born.) Estonians have a long and proud tradition of choral singing and since 1869, have celebrated their culture in an annual nationwide song   festival called "Laulupidu." The turning point in their struggle for independence came in 1991 at that   festival when hundreds of thousands of Estonians stood and sang together patriotic songs that the     Russians had declared "illegal." Read more about it and the documentary film from 2007 HERE

SUMMER RELIGIOUS EDUCATION FEATURES CREATION OF GIANT UU STORY COLLAGE
This Sunday, June 2nd is the beginning of a 13-week experiential religious education program that offers each child an opportunity to explore how our UU key seven principles/practices are part of their story.

Each session will include a brief presentation by a local artist followed by an art activity where students will create an element to add to the group collage.

In addition to art-making sessions, the summer will include three multigenerational Sundays:
  • Sunday, June 30th: Flower Communion
  • Sunday, July 28th: Outdoor Worship & Potluck
  • Sunday, August 25th: Celebrating Our UU Stories

The children's giant collage will be on Exhibit at the Dayton Metro Library during September as part of the annual Peace DAYTON's month-long peace emphasis.

We still need a few parent volunteers to assist for about one hour on a Sunday. Contact our DRE, Jerry Leggett, at [email protected] if you are willing to lend a hand.

HEAD'S UP! This would be a great program for children to invite their friends and neighbors to experience our UU faith community.
--- Jerry Leggett, Director of Religious Education

GETTING IN TOUCH WITH OUR ADMINISTRATOR
Now that summertime has officially arrived, many may be enjoying time off work so they can travel, work on projects at home, or merely enjoy the slower pace that this time of year can provide.  It's a good time to remember to call MVUUF first before stopping by, to make sure that I'll be there to help you. Due to my need to help out my mother, my love of gardening, and my joy in hanging out with my sweet grandson, Isaac, I may not always be around during the summer. But simply give me a call (937-436-3628) and let me know what you'll need...and I'll do my best to be there for you!
---Jennie Freiberger, Fellowship Administrator

But don't worry...the E-Blast will still be arriving EVERY Friday morning to keep to up-to-date with ALL the MANY things going on at MVUUF, and The Forum will return for August, as well!

CUUPS MONTHLY DISCUSSION GROUP
Sunday, June 9th, 12:30-2:00 PM, in the Founders' Room
Sunday, July 14th, 12:30-2:00 PM, in in the Founders' Room
Join CUUPS (Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans) for our monthly discussion group. June's topic is Are We Living in the Matrix? This promises to be an interesting topic. And in July Kathleen will briefly   introduce the topic of candle magic. What is candle magic? What color of candle should you use to     enhance specific magical intentions? We'll open the discussion to the group. Tell the group how you practice candle magic and what works best for you. Suggest color correspondences for specific intentions. Successes and disappointments in your candle magical workings and anything else.

The discussion group focuses on topics relevant to a variety of pagan spiritual paths. This event is free and open to the public; ALL are welcome.

Questions? Please contact Kathleen Werning or Adrienne Clark at [email protected]

FULL MOON RITUAL
Sunday evening, June 16th, 6:30-9:00 PM, at the Fellowship
CUUPS will be having a Full Moon ritual celebration! Often referred to as the Strawberry Moon, June's full moon celebrates the moon in all her glory and the abundance of growth and new life in nature. We will call the elements, set intentions and raise energy for our intentions. The goddess will be honored in her form as Lady Moon. After the ritual we will share light snacks and conversation. Tarot and rune   readers will be available for those interested.

This celebration is free and open to the public, and family friendly; ALL are welcome. This is a great opportunity to learn about CUUPS and our wide range of beliefs. Bring your favorite snack to share. Questions? Please contact Kathleen Werning or Adrienne Clark at [email protected]

SUMMER SOLSTICE CELEBRATION
Sunday, June 23rd, 6:30 PM, Cox Arboretum Metro Park,
6733 N. Springboro Pike  Dayton Ohio 45449
Join CUUPS (Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans) as we celebrate the Summer Solstice otherwise known as Midsummer or Litha . Litha is the time when we honor the Sun God. This is the longest day and shortest night of the year. The days will begin to shorten and the nights lengthen after Litha. We are thankful for the blessings of the season as fruits, vegetables and flowers are flourishing. Nature is alive with the sounds of new life. We will be giving thanks and honoring the gods outside (weather permitting). We will gather at the Gazebo at the park to celebrate the Sun at its highest point in the sky, ground and raise and direct energy. This is a celebration of warmth, light and abundance. We will finish our celebration with a short walk in the park. Bring water for the walk and a snack for yourself if you like. If you would like to carpool to the park some of us will meet at 6:00 PM in MVUUF's parking lot.

In the event of rain we will meet to celebrate at MVUUF, calling the elements, setting intentions and   expressing our gratitude for our seasonal blessings. We will share a potluck dinner after ritual. There will be time for conversation and divination for those interested. Open, free and family friendly.

Questions? contact Kathleen Werning or Adrienne Clark at [email protected].

NEW MOON GATHERING
Sunday, July 7th, 6:30-9:00 PM, at the Fellowship
Join CUUPS as we gather around the time of the new moon to work on our own personal Magical Journal or Book of Shadows. Each month around the New Moon we gather to discuss topics of interest around our pagan paths. We discuss a different general topic along with a type of divination and a famous pagan. We research and discuss the correspondences associated with the month such as elements, planets, herbs, crystals and zodiac sign. Come learn and share your ideas with the group. This month we will discuss chakras, pendulum divination, the element of wood, Selena Fox and the correspondences related to Friday. Binders, paper, research and reference sheets are provided. Bring your favorite snack to share. Open to the public, free and family friendly.

Questions? Please contact Adrienne Clark at [email protected].

CELEBRATING THE BUCK MOON
Sunday, July 21st, 6:30-9:00 PM, at the Fellowship
Join CUUPS as we celebrate the Buck Moon, so named in reference to the new antlers seen on deer bucks' foreheads around this time of year. Plains Native Americans referred to the July moon as the Thunder Moon, as signified by the storms often present in the American Plains this time of year. The moon is at its fullest in its cycle. Crops are beginning to mature and bear fruit. We are feeling the  increasing warmth of the Sun as the dog days of summer approach. We will welcome the elements and call on the sacred feminine energy of the Mother Goddess in her form as the full moon while we express our gratitude for our blessings. We will release all those things that no longer serve our highest good. There will be the opportunity to share conversation and divination for those who wish. Bring your favorite snack to share. Open to the public, free and family friendly.

Questions? Please contact Kathleen Werning or Adrienne Clark at [email protected] .

TRANSPORTATION TO MVUUF
Do you have room in your car for a congregant or visitor? Do you need a ride to MVUUF to join us? If you would be willing to ride-share or need a ride, please contact Kathleen Werning, our Ride Coordinator, at 937-825-4314 or [email protected]. Kathleen will need your name, contact information, your area of town and whether you can provide a ride or need a ride. This is a way to care for each other and increase participation at MVUUF.

ST. VINCENT De PAUL LUNCH
Saturday, June 8th and Saturday, July 13th,
10:45 AM, 120 West Apple Street, in Dayton
Please join us on June 8th (and July 13th!), in providing our long-standing second Saturday lunch for women and families staying at the St. Vincent de Paul Shelter.

We continue our "summer" menu and our needs this month include sandwich filling (sloppy joes, BBQ pulled pork/chicken/beef, tuna salad and one batch of egg salad), vegetable dishes (pasta salad with LOTS of veggies, cole slaw, or other vegetable - green beans have been popular!), green salads, fresh fruit/fruit salads, 100% orange juice and 1% milk (we use buns from St. Vincent's pantry for the sandwiches). We need several donations of most items, with each donation serving 15-20 people. Please bring all items---heated if applicable---to 120 West Apple Street (the St. Vincent de Paul Gateway Shelter) by 10:45 am.

You can sign up for Saturday, June 8, lunch on the clipboard in the Gathering Space, or you can contact Lynn Buffington at 937-657-0426 (call or text) or [email protected]. You can also check on what is needed at SignUp Genius  (no need to log in unless you also want to sign up through Genius).

We expect St. Vincent's to continue to be very full with about 120 in house, but the number of Saturday lunch diners is unpredictable as some residents, especially families, take advantage of warmer weather to go elsewhere. In May, the weather was mild and we fed 61, with 41 in the women's group at 11 and 20 in the family group at noon.   Thanks to the many who served (pictured below) and/or provided food! If you would like more information regarding volunteering, please take one of the info flyers near the sign-up sheet in the Social Action area in the Gathering Space.
