The Parish Picnic is coming up! Join us for a parish-wide Pentecost picnic on June 9th after the worship service. St. Paul's will provide fried chicken & potato salad! Please bring a side dish to share according to the first letter of your last name:

Q-Z = Desserts

Jonathan Austin Returns to St. Paul's THIS SUNDAY!
To add to our festive Pentecost celebrations, Jonathan Austin, the Juggler, will be performing in the breezeway immediately following church this Sunday, June 9th, as we move into Scott Hall for our picnic. He will continue his performance while we eat lunch.
It was such fun when Jonathan came to juggle, tell stories, and perform tricks for us last year. Join us this Sunday so as not to miss this master entertainer!

Starting this upcoming Monday, (Monday, June 10) our 12:05 Daily Communion service will move back down from the Norwood Room to the St. Paul's Chapel. Keep an eye out for more info on this change, coming to you soon!

Contemplative Evening Services Coming to St. Paul's this Summer
We will be offering a Contemplative Evening Service twice this summer! The first will be held on
Sunday, July 21st
at 5:00 p.m.
, and the second will be on
Sunday, August 18th at 5:00 p.m.
These services will be held in the Chancel of the Sanctuary. Light refreshments will be provided in the gathering space afterward.

The Alien Episcopalian:
A Faith Formation Series by the Rev. Bill Queen
9:00 a.m. in the Norwood Room
To many Christians and other denominations, Episcopalians may seem like aliens. We resemble Roman Catholics in some of our worship and church organization: we use an historic liturgy, and we have Deacons, Priests, and Bishops. We also resemble Protestant churches: we read and study the Bible, expect personal commitment to the faith, and put a strong emphasis on preaching. Yet there are things that set us apart from both Catholicism and Protestantism.
Over the course of three Sundays, the Rev. Bill Queen will lead discussions of these "alien" characteristics of the Episcopal Church: the things that distinguish us in our somewhat different approach to Christianity. This is a large topic to cover so, to help us focus on your particular interests and questions, handouts will be available before each week in both paper and digital versions. You are encouraged to review them in advance and come prepared with your questions.
June 16 - General approaches to Christianity from the Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, and Protestant perspectives

June 23 - General approaches to Episcopalianism from the Moderate, Broad Church, Evangelical, Anglo-Catholic, Social Gospel, and Charismatic perspectives

Whether you are new to St. Paul's or to the Episcopal Church, are a longtime Episcopalian wanting a refresher, or are already knowledgeable in this topic and can add depth to our discussions, plan to come take part.

Meditation/Contemplative Prayer Practice
Returns to St. Paul's in June
Meditation practices will resume on Sunday mornings at 9:00 AM. We will continue the practice during the summer, beginning
June 16 - September 1.
These sessions will take place in the Family Group Room (on the second floor, rooms 219-220) for the 16th, and for the remaining Sundays will be in the Palmore Room.
For those of you who attended our last Meditation series, the format will be the same: beginning with silence, a short reading, a chant, a 20 minute sit, then time for comments or discussion.
You do not need to have experience meditating to join us. Please join for as many or as few sessions as you would like.

Five Parish Events to Help Us Prepare
for Our New Rector
Mark your calendar now for
The Home Stretch: Five Parish Events to Help Us Prepare for Our New Rector! All parishioners are invited and encouraged to participate in all five of these opportunities to bring to completion the parish's interim time.
Heritage,
Leadership,
Worship,
Connections, and
The Future will be our topics. It is important for you to try to attend all of them, as each topic will build upon the previous ones and will prepare the way for the ones to follow.
Each session will go from
11:30 am to 1:00 pm. The dates are as follows:
- Sunday, June 30
- Sunday, July 14
- Sunday, July 28
- Sunday, August 11, and
- Sunday, August 25
Each event will offer a light lunch immediately after Sunday worship, from
11:30 to noon, followed by an hour of focused work upon that day's topic. You will be done by 1:00 pm. And we won't be coming to these topics cold, as each of those Sunday worship services will offer Bible passages, prayer, and preaching to get us all thinking theologically. Child care will be provided.
Please sign up in advance, so we can be sure to have enough food.

St. Paul's to relaunch EfM;
registration begins June 2019
St. Paul's will be launching an
EfM group to run
mid September 2019 to early June 2020. Sign-ups will begin this month, June 2019.
Stephanie Shareck Werner, who first joined St. Paul's in 1989 and also worships in Ashland, will serve as mentor for the convening group. Stephanie will be available to answer questions on Sunday, June 30.

STILL SEEKING: Travel-Sized Toiletries
for Emmaus Guests!
Our weekly
Emmaus program is still looking for
the following items to hand out to our guests (all travel sizes): Lotion, shampoo, deodorant, razors, hand sanitizer, lip balm, tooth paste, tooth brushes.
We are also looking for some more people to come and interact with our guests. It is
equally important in this ministry to provide true fellowship to our guests, as it is to provide the meal.

Announcing: Women's Retreat Group Picnic!
This year's group of women at the women's retreat had so much fun we wanted to keep the fellowship going! We will have events throughout the summer for all women of St. Paul's to gather in fellowship and love.
Our first event is a picnic at
Chimborazo Park on
Sunday,
June 23rd at 11:45 a.m. Bring your lunch, a beverage, a blanket or chair, and come to have lunch in the park. Let's meet at the Gazebo and sit under the trees to stay cool!

We pray for the criminal justice system in Metropolitan Richmond: For the police, judges, lawyers and court personnel, correctional officers and institutions, juvenile detention facilities, and probation officers.
We pray for all the Baptized in their daily work, especially those of our congregation and community who are in the stage and screen industries including writers, dancers, actors, stagehands, directors, producers, musicians, box office and promotion personnel.
We pray for those who are ill: for Dan Benn, partner of Gail James; Grant Hellmers and Steve Jenkins. We also pray for those who are no longer with us: for Mimi Berry and Olin Hyde, husband of Jane Baird Hyde.
Almighty God, we entrust all who are dear to us to your never-failing care and love, for this life and the life to come, knowing that you are doing for them better things than we can desire or pray for; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
We would also like to extend a special prayer for the St. Paul's Search Committee:
Almighty God, look graciously on the people of St. Paul's. Be with us and lead us as we seek the next rector for our church. We ask your direction and guidance for those who shall choose our new spirtual leader; that we may receive an upright and faithful pastor who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries, breaking down the walls that separate us from our neighbors, uniting us in bonds of love, and working through our struggle and confusion to seek reconciliation in Richmond and the world. Grant us perception, faithfulness and joy, so that we may hear your voice in all our deliberations; that in our diversity we may be all of one heart & soul, united in one holy bond of truth and peace, of faith and charity. Grant us also the desire and the ability to truly hear each other and those who have entrusted us with this process. Give us courage to respond and act as you lead us. Come Holy Spirit.
We pray this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
