Master Gardener Pollinator Corners
Members of the Anne Arundel County Master Gardeners Beekeeping Project will discuss
beekeeping, including the life and decline of honeybees and how we can create safe and welcoming habitats for all pollinators by planting native
plants and practicing sustainable gardening techniques. Weather permitting, we will have an "observation hive", allowing visitors to watch honeybee activity without concern of being stung.

As the growing season ramps up, so do homeowner requests for information and answers to gardening questions. Anne Arundel County's Master Gardener Program has two long-standing outreach efforts that provide a way for members of the public to connect locally with science-based information.
The first, Ask A Master Gardener, conducts plant clinics at various locations throughout the County. Master Gardener volunteers identify insect and plant disease and provide resources on various topics such as lawn care and choosing practices that protect the Chesapeake Bay. Volunteers also promote composting, vegetable and flower gardening and help citizens access online horticultural resources, how-to videos and publications offered by the University of Maryland Extension. Look for Ask A Master Gardener volunteers at these locations:

The second program is Bay-Wise. Master Gardener volunteers strive to achieve better water quality in the Chesapeake Bay by promoting smarter gardening and landscape management. Bay-Wise trained Master Gardeners conduct free visits to certify yards as Bay-Wise using the Bay-Wise Yardstick. Free yard visits can also be arranged for Master Gardener Bay-Wise volunteers to assess landscapes for sustainability and suggest strategies for problem areas. Bay-Wise volunteers offer presentations to community groups and school groups and man information booths at fairs and other public events. 
Bay-wise certification involves using a check list to "measure" practices that promote bay health. These include mowing at the proper height, watering vegetation efficiently, choosing the right plants adapted for local climate and soil conditions, controlling storm water run-off, mulching appropriately, recycling yard waste, planting for pollinators and wildlife and minimizing fertilizer and pesticide use. All operations that make or exceed $2,500 gross annual income, or have 8 or more animal units, are required to have and implement a current nutrient management plan. Soil and tissue analyses only need updated every three years. Producers with blocks of fruits less than one acre may forgo tissue sampling if only N recommendations are of interest. While certified farmers can write plans for their own farm, all other farmers must contact a private consultant or University of Maryland Nutrient Management Advisor for a plan. High School Financial Planning Program Curriculum Training
for Teachers and Volunteers

prepare high school teachers and adult volunteers/educators to teach Personal Finance to teenagers

Healthy Eating - Broccoli Baked Potatoes
3 stalks broccoli
1 cup shredded light cheddar cheese
ΒΌ cup low-fat milk
Salt and pepper to taste
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Scrub potatoes. Poke potato skin with a fork in several places. Bake at for 30-60 minutes until soft, depending on the size. Steam broccoli just until tender and chop into small pieces. Slice the potatoes in half. Scoop the insides into a bowl with the broccoli. Add milk, 3/4 cup cheese, salt and pepper. Mash together until the mixture is pale green with dark green flecks. Put the potato mixture into the potato skins and sprinkle
with remaining 1/4 cup of cheese. Microwave to heat through
