SN-ICC SUPPORTS TODDLER SWIM PROGRAMS
SN-ICC Public Outreach Committee Chairperson Christa Bilbrey recenty completed the pleasant task of handing out checks on behalf of the Chapter to local governmental jurisdictions to help fund their toddler swim lesson programs.
The Chapter contributed $28,500 this year to local drowning prevention programs, including $2,500 to each jurisdiction in Southern Nevada. The money is used to provide free swimming lessons to toddlers and other young children.
Unfortunately, drowning is the leading cause of injury-related death among Clark County children aged 1-4 years, according to the Southern Nevada Health District. There are an estimated 115,000 residential swimming pools, 5,800 residential spas and 4,000 commercial pools and spas throughout Clark County, making the risk of drowning ever-present.

CLASS REVIEWS CHANGES TO UPDATED IBC
Some 50 SN-ICC members attended the Chapter's "Significant Changes from the 2012 International Building Code to the 2018 International Building Code in Southern Nevada" class in May at the Henderson Inspection Services Building.
The class provided the attendees with an overview of significant base code changes between the 2012 and 2018 IBC; a comprehensive review of adopted Southern Nevada amendments under the 2018 IBC; a review of the unique high-rise/mid-rise building design requirements in each Southern Nevada Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ); and a primer on the newly adopted 2018 International Existing Building Code (IEBC) in Southern Nevada.
A survey after the class indicated a very high level of satisfaction among the attendees.
The Chapter thanks and salutes the class instructors:
- Michael Gentille, C.B.O., president of PCNA Consulting Group and a SN-ICC board member;
- Jeff Grove, P.E, senior fire protection engineer/technical fellow at Jensen Hughes;
- Ed Kaminski, P.E., fire protection engineer at the Clark County Fire Protection Bureau;
- Brian Woodward, P.E., fire protection engineer at Fire Protection Engineers Inc.
The Chapter also thanks and salutes the City of Henderson Building & Fire Safety Department for hosting the class at its Inspection Services Building.

SN-ICC OBSERVES BUILDING SAFETY MONTH
The Chapter participated in the 39th annual Building Safety Month, a public awareness campaign celebrated by jurisdictions worldwide during the month of May to help individuals, families and businesses understand what it takes to create safe and sustainable structures.
Building Safety Month was the theme of the Chapter Meeting in May. SN-ICC set up a display table with brochures and flyers from the International Code Council. There was a raffle drawing for an ABC-rated fire extinguisher.

Brian Thomas, president of Budget Fence Co., discussed electric gate codes and standards at the May Chapter Meeting.
|
GATE SAFETY, TECHNOLOGY TOPIC OF MEETING
Chapter member, Brian Thomas, president of Budget Fence Co., presented information about the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) 325 standard and "Click2Enter" technology as the guest speaker at the Chapter Meeting in May.
The updated UL 325 standard is a safety standard for door, drapery, gate, louver, and window operators and systems. Specifically, it applies to electric operators for doors, draperies, gates, louvers, windows and other opening and closing appliances rated 600 volts or less.
Click2Enter technology allows public safety agencies and authorized users to have gate access using radio transceivers instead of keys, codes and remote control actuators.
The Chapter thanks Brian Thomas for the interesting and informative presentation.

CHAPTER CONTRIBUTES TO MOBILE STEM LAB
Following a presentation and request for assistance from representatives of UNLV's Howard R. Hughes School of Engineering, SN-ICC has contributed $10,000 to help support the newly launched "Tech Trekker Mobile STEM Lab."
|
|
|
Tech Trekker Lab
|
The mobile lab is a joint effort by the engineering college and the Nevada National Security Site to increase student exposure to and engagement in modern science and engineering tools in order to encourage students into high-demand science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) fields. The new Tech Trekker Mobile STEM Lab brings technology and standards-based science and engineering lessons directly to teachers' classrooms, specifically, the 4th, 6th and 10-12th grades.
The contribution was presented at the Chapter's April Meeting. Rama Venkat, dean and professor of electrical and computer engineering at the college, was the guest speaker at the April meeting. He discussed the college's programs and projects of interest to code professionals.
UNLV recently notified the Chapter that the university has welcomed the Chapter into the UNLV Foundation Benefactor Society - a group of 600 university benefactors who have contributed $50,000 to $99,999 to the university.
