If a June night could talk, it would probably boast it invented romance.

Driving into the sunset on Angels Dine Out, heading out to Arroyo Vino

A quick update on our 2019 Angels Dine Out . . . Our current tally is showing a seven percent  increase in donations over last year, but not all of the checks are in. We anticipate having a final tally by next month.  All in all it was a roaring success - thanks in large part to the one hundred gracious volunteer ambassadors and liaisons. Good job team!

We have no idea who comes up with these seemingly random holidays, but they do make for a good reason to celebrate! June 11th is National Corn on the Cob Day!!! Although corn is probably not yet ripe for the picking in this region, somewhere in the world corn is being harvested and shipped to a grocery store nearby for your maximum convenience. In case you didn't know, here is the absolute best way to boil corn on the cob. For those adventurous types, here's a more extensive list of ways to prepare corn on the cob with all the bells and whistles. Make sure you pull this list out later in the season when our local corn is making its appearance at the farmer's market.

For all of the Wiccans and pagans among us - Happy Litha, Midsummer and Summer Solstice! Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year which, for those of us in the northern hemisphere, occurs on June 21st. At the north pole, there is continuous daylight due to the tilt of the earth.

The event has been celebrated since ancient times by cultures the world over. The celebration of Midsummer was part of northern European cultural heritage, but many immigrants lost the traditions. Click here to learn more about the traditional pagan celebration of Midsummer.

If you would like to rekindle the traditions of your ancestors, here are some ideas for a Solstice celebration . . .

- Keep a Sacred Fire burning throughout the evening

- Stay up all night on Solstice Eve and welcome the rising sun at dawn

- Make a pledge to Mother Earth of something that you will do to improve the environment and then begin carrying it out

- Have a magical gift exchange with friends

- Burn your Yule wreath in a Summer Solstice bonfire

- Exchange songs, chants, and stories with others in person or through the mail

- Do ecstatic dancing to drums around a blazing bonfire

- Cook a festival feast for friends using foods that look like the sun

Wondering what to cook for your Solstice celebration? The internet gods have bestowed upon us a website that will assist you in said preparations. Here is a list of Food for the Fairies and the Sun Gods. Happy Solstice friends!

So me of you attended one of our first aid certification trainings and learned the warning signs of a stroke. For those of you who don't know, or need a refresher, this is for you! People of any age can experience a stroke, and in the past ten years, incidents of strokes in young people have increased 44%. Stroke is currently the fifth leading cause of death in the US. Strokes occur when a blood clot blocks an artery or when a blood vessel breaks, interrupting blood flow to an area of the brain and causing brain cells to die. Acting quickly after someone suffers a stroke can greatly reduce the impact. Here's a helpful infographic to help you remember the steps to take.

Reminder for Delivery Drivers...

By now, most of you know one of the cardinal rules of meal delivery: don't leave a meal bag outside if someone isn't home. There's a second piece to that rule.  If you are unable to make a delivery because the client isn't home, please be sure to call Kitchen Angels with that information. It quite literally could be a matter of life or death.

A few weeks back, one of our newer drivers left a meal bag outside because the client didn't come to the door, plus he forgot to phone. The next day, the delivery driver found the meal bag still hanging on the door knob and called our office. We have a great deal of knowledge about the clients, their conditions, schedules, and habits. When Jeanette received the news, she called the police for a "wellness check." Turns out, the client had fallen and become wedged between some furniture and the wall. She spent two days on the floor. Thank you Evan Shover, for letting us know about your client. Your call may have saved her life!

Often, our delivery volunteers are the only people clients see all day. Please keep us informed if you find a client absent, or acting "out of sorts." We can assist if a client needs other resources or an increased level of care. Thanks everyone!

Community Connections...

Joni Brenneisen of Christ Church connects Kitchen Angels with parishioners who want to serve their community. Thanks Joni !
Kitchen Angels is trying to make connections with various organizations in Santa Fe and what better way to bridge these connections than with you, our volunteers. We would like to build relationships with our local churches, service clubs and banks. So in an effort to establish these connections within our community, can you please let us know what organizations you belong to?

  • Do you belong to a service club or social club?
  • What bank do you bank with?
  • Do you belong to any of these churches?
    • Unitarian Universalist Congregation of SF
    • Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi
    • First Presbyterian Church of Santa Fe
Please contact Dwayne by June 15th with any connections. dtrujillo@kitchenangels.org
Thanks volunteers!
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You! Thanks

KIVA Coach Allison with Sage, JoMarie & Italy
Kitchen Angels is grateful for all of the school-aged volunteers who assist us throughout the year. During the 2018-2019 school year, we had two groups that helped out quite a bit. Ten to 13 high school students from The Masters Program worked with us making breakfasts, washing dishes, filling client bags for our frozen meal program, setting up the delivery room, painting a mural, and preparing for Angels Dine Out. Fridays were always a little bit smoother thanks to this group and their teacher Sarah Weisberg.

We want to give a shout-out to the KIVA program and all of the  students and coaches who graced our program on Tuesdays throughout the school year. It was so good getting to know the 13+ differently-abled students who helped set up the delivery room, washed dishes, and packaged bread. They brought smiles to all of our faces with their joy, kindness and willingness to serve.

Many ongoing thanks to the young people who deliver meals year-round - Ida, Ella, Rome, Mason and Maya - we're honored that you're taking the time to care for people in your community. It takes a special kind of person to volunteer - and you're that kind. It gives us hope for the future!
