Greetings,
This past academic year has been remarkable in many ways. Associate Dean Kaya van Beynen received the EBSS Distinguished Education and Behavioral Sciences Librarian Award sponsored by the American Psychological Association, a prestigious national library award. Emily Mann and David Shedden played key roles in establishing the USF St. Petersburg Native American Land Acknowledgment. NPML continued to support the local St. Petersburg community. Most recently, thanks to David Brodosi and his team, NPML is hosting the Florida Holocaust Museum as they interview Holocaust Survivors using a technique developed by the USC Shoah Foundation called Dimensions in Testimony. Elizabeth Gelman, the Museum’s executive director, provided some information about the Survivors: “The Survivors’ experiences are all very different from one another: some were in work and concentration camps; some were hidden children; one escaped to the Shanghai Ghetto; and our oldest participant, who will be 98 the week after her filming, lived through Auschwitz. Each story is a miracle and I feel privileged to play a small role in preserving their testimony.” I concur—I am very proud that NPML could host the filming to support this significant initiative. You can find more specifics about NPML faculty and staff accomplishments in our NPML Spotlight 2020-2021.
We are now turning our attention to Summer and Fall 2021 when we expect to have more in-person, face-to-face experiences. I hope that you all get some well-deserved time to relax this summer after this challenging year. I know I speak for many in NPML when I say we can’t wait to see you all again in person.

USF Faculty Research Lightning Talks
NPML hosted its annual Faculty Research Lightning Talks virtually this year as part of USF's Research Week. The Faculty Lightning Talks began in 2013 and are an opportunity for faculty at the USF St. Petersburg campus to showcase their research projects. Faculty who present typically are recipients of internal grants, and this year there was a focus on faculty who were working with students on the research projects.
If you missed the presentations this year you can view them in the digital archive, along with recordings from previous years. This year's presenters included Dr. Deby Cassill, Dr. Kemesha Gabbidon, Dr. Alison Gainsbury, Dr. Jill McCracken, Dr. Jennifer O'Brien, Dr. Wendy Rote, and Dr. Shelly Wagers.

A New Library Catalog is Coming
In July 2021 USF Libraaries will be getting a new library catalog. The “look and feel” of the USF Libraries website, catalog, and discovery search interface will not drastically change, but the underlying platform will improve access to and management of academic library collections.
This new shared catalog will provide:
- A shared catalog of library holdings enabling users to search materials owned by any public college or university in Florida.
-
Ability to search a statewide collection of over 400,000 online journals, e-books, and other valuable resources (access is tied to institutional subscriptions).
- Access to more than 150,000 unique digital archive items and increased capacity to search and access local digital collections.
- A statewide open educational community to promote and support textbook affordability and Open Educational Resources (OERs).
As USF Libraries transition to the new system, some changes will occur in the coming weeks:
-
As of May 1, U-borrow will be temporarily suspended, BUT book requests will automatically be redirected to ILL until the new catalog is in place.
- As of May 27, no new items will be added to the library catalog until the transition to the new catalog is completed.
- By mid-July the changeover to the new system will take place.

In celebration of the Native American land acknowledgment for USF St. Petersburg campus, NPML has created several resources to help people learn more about the Native people of Florida. You will find a Display on Native Americans in Florida on the first floor of the library. You can also do more in depth research using the Native American research guide. This guide includes information about the historical people that lived on what is now USF St. Petersburg campus, the Tocobaga and Safety Harbor culture, as well as the descendants of those people that are still living in Florida, the Seminole and Miccosukee tribes.

New Career for Southerast Guide Dog Puppy “Jo-Jo”
Jo-Jo has found her career, a fire investigation canine! After deciding guide dog work wasn’t for her, Jo-Jo successfully completed her training to be an arson detection K9 through the State Farm Arson Dog Program, and she will be joining the Colorado Bureau of Fire Prevention and Control. For those who did not get a chance to meet Jo-Jo, she is the third Southeastern Guide Dog raised by Steph James right here in the library. Steph would like to give a special thanks to everyone in the library for helping in Jo-Jo’s training, just being exposed to so many different people and the sights and sounds in the library helps the dogs get ready for their future careers!
