Spring 2019
Welcome
Spring greeting from Dean Michele H. Jackson
Spring is a beautiful time in East Lansing. The campus around Holmes Hall comes to life as flowers bloom, trees spread their canopies, wildlife returns to the Sanford Natural Area – and seniors celebrate  final  final exams before they don cap and gown for a walk across the graduation platform.

Commencement is a special time not only for students and their families, but also for faculty. We cheer with every student as they receive that hard earned diploma. We know the dedication and the passion that was needed to get to where they are today. Briggsies are well-known across campus as among the most engaged, hardest working, collaborative, mature, and accomplished students. And that is a well-earned reputation.

Our new graduates will go off in many directions, to be sure, following many different dreams and pursuing a variety of goals. In years to come, they will remember the community in Holmes Hall, the support of fellow students in study groups and the help of their peers as Undergraduate Learning Assistants, the individualized attention from their faculty, and the many times they were engaged and challenged by professors and by fellow students in class, in the lab, or in conversations in hallways and office hours.

Now, though, their next chapter begins, as Briggs alumni. I’m sure you will welcome them into your ranks, to join you as you use your distinctive skills and perspective to make a positive difference in the world. We can’t wait to see what they will do. To welcome them back to share with future students. To celebrate them often.

Once a Briggsie, always a Briggsie.
Class of 2019 at a glance
We congratulate the Class of 2019 on their recent graduation from Michigan State University. They were quite an accomplished class. Above is just a glimpse of their impressive record.
Faculty and Staff
Announcing new associate dean for research & faculty affairs
Dr. Jerry Urquhart was recently named associate dean for research and faculty affairs at Lyman Briggs College, effective May 20, 2019.

Urquhart is an associate professor of biology at Lyman Briggs with a joint appointment in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. He has been a faculty member at Lyman Briggs College for 20 years, in both the non-tenure and tenure systems.

We are grateful for the leadership of Dr. Kendra Spence Cheruvelil who served the college in the role of associate dean for the past two years.
Kent Workman, director of alumni relations retiring at the end of June
On Friday, April 26, 2019, the LBC community and dozens of friends and colleagues gathered to celebrate Kent Workman's 32 years of service to MSU (and 18 prior to that elsewhere!) Kent most recently served as our director of alumni relations after a long career as an advisor and a residence director.

His time here at Michigan State will wrap up at the end of June. He will be missed by students, faculty, and alumni alike.

New LBC alumnus receives MSU Outstanding Senior Award
Congratulations to Outstanding Senior Award Winner Malcolm Davis, a 2019 LBC graduate in History, Philosophy and Sociology of Science.

Each year the Michigan State University Senior Class Council recognizes up to 25 outstanding seniors in the graduating class. The awardees have succeeded academically, served the university enthusiastically, and have positively impacted MSU and the community.

We asked this outstanding senior a few questions about his experience at Briggs.
Undergraduate research highlighted at the 2019 Research Symposium
For students at Lyman Briggs College, research is an important part of coursework and career development. Each April, the college features research during the Lyman Briggs Research Symposium. The marquis event is the LBC Research Symposium Poster Session supported by MSUFCU.

Students have the opportunity to present their work to the Briggs community in one college-wide poster session. Through poster and oral presentations, students share the results of faculty-led projects, class projects, or independent research projects.

A number of Briggs alumni and faculty emeriti volunteered to serve as judges of the poster session. We are grateful for their participation.

The MSUFCU Grand Prize was awarded to sophomore Lauren Jernstadt for her poster, "Strategies for Targeting Pancreatic Cancer."
LBC students explore the history of mathematics in Europe
"There is something deeply gratifying about getting physically close to important things in our lives. To walk the same streets as Galileo. To look through the same window as Newton, to stand in the very places where great mathematics was done – such things are magical."

For three weeks Dr. Abe Edwards and 14 Lyman Briggs College students are traveling across Europe exploring the history of mathematics and how it has influenced culture and society.

Travel along by reading their reflections in their course blog.

Before Holmes Hall stood at the corner of Shaw and Hagadorn

Did you know that before 1953, when Michigan State College (MSU's name at the time) broke ground to build new residences--Holmes Hall--that homesteads and farms dating back to the 1860's stood at the corner of Shaw Lane and Hagadorn Road?

This summer, the Campus Archaeology Program hosted its four-week Field School just east of Holmes Hall. They found a number of interesting artifacts dating back to the late 19th century which will eventually be on display in the classroom wing of Holmes Hall.
DEPTH

Explore humanity's relationship to water through the lenses of art and science at Science Gallery Detroit's exhibition DEPTH, which opens June 8 in the Michigan Science Center.

The exhibition runs June 8 through August 17 and is free.

The mission of Science Gallery is to act as a collider of art and science. Science Gallery International partnered with Michigan State University last year to open a Science Gallery in Detroit, which was the first in the Americas.
