A Note from our Interim Pastor
|
|
“In the Last Days,” God says,
“I will pour out my Spirit
on every kind of people:
Your sons will prophesy,
also your daughters;
Your young men will see visions,
your old men dream dreams.
When the time comes,
I’ll pour out my Spirit
On those who serve me,
men and women both,
and they’ll prophesy.
U
nderstandably, the followers of Christ were in a state of despair and inactivity immediately following the crucifixion. However, the malaise seemed to linger on even though Christ appeared in their midst, and ate with them and taught them. For nearly two months, the disciples seemed to be moved very little by the appearances of Christ, although these were events of great spiritual significance. It was as if they were frozen perhaps, spiritually empty, unsure of themselves.
On
Ascension Day,
which we celebrated last Sunday, however, things took a different turn. Upon the ascension of Christ the disciples became physically and spiritually moved to action. The scriptures record that they began to worship again and with great joy returned to the temple in Jerusalem, where they stayed continually praising God and waiting.
Then, on the day of
Pentecost
,
which we will celebrate this Sunday, June 9, they were so filled with God’s Spirit that they literally charged out from behind closed doors to boldly preach the Gospel of Christ. Not even the resurrection of Christ had this kind of effect on the early believers. It took the inflowing of the Holy Spirit to break them out of fear and timidity and two months of spiritual trill turned into a spiritual torrent.
In one day three thousand people, witnesses to these events, were changed forever.
What an amazing, crazy day it must have been when the Holy Spirit appeared on the day of
Pentecost
.
“The wind began to switch, the house to pitch, and suddenly the hinges started to unhitch.” Oh wait, that’s the tornado in
The Wizard of Oz
.
The wind starts blowing, tongues of fire start appearing on peoples’ mouths, and next thing you know everyone is speaking in languages they didn’t even know . . . and yet somehow people heard messages they could all understand.
The event was so spontaneous and unusual that onlookers thought they were crazy-drunk.
This must have been a wild- crazy experience. And yet out of this experience, Peter recognized that Joel’s prophetic promise was coming true: a new day of creation was beginning—a season of new visions and dreams.

Update on Senior Minister Search

We want to hear from you!
The Transition Team has been working on our church profile which will go out to prospective candidates for the Senior Minister position. It is important that we let these candidates know “Who we are” and “What is God calling us to be”. We need your input to answer these questions.
We have created a survey which we hope each and every member of the congregation will take the time to complete. There are three ways you can do this:
1)

Pick up the survey on the table in the narthex or from the church office.

SPECIAL WORSHIP – PLEASE ATTEND!
We will have a special worship service on Sunday, June 23 which will include discussion groups to review the survey results and discuss these various topics. A member of the Transition Team will head each discussion group. PLEASE ATTEND these very important meetings to help shape the future of our church!

Members of Leisure Monday, June 10
at 12:00 noon

The MOL annual picnic will be, as usual, in the yard in front of the church at 12 noon, Monday, June 10. Food will be the same (hot dogs, hamburgers, etc.), and soda.
Donation will be $6 as usual. All are welcome.
Please bring your own chairs & small tables. In the event of rain, we will move into Simmons Hall.

This is the last event of the season. Members of Leisure will resume in the Fall.

Interfaith Ramadan Dinner held on May 18th
|

Congregants who attended the Ramadan Iftar dinner on May 18
th
were greeted at the entrance to Simmons Hall and asked to refrain from consuming food or drink until after the call for prayer, which on this evening, would occur precisely at 8:11p.m.
We were about to share a meal with representatives from North Jersey chapter of the Peace Island Institute, (PII) an organization founded in 2003 by New Jersey Turkish American Muslims and whose purpose is to promote respect and mutual understanding among all faiths and cultures through organized educational and cultural activities such as lectures, seminars, conferences and discussion panels.
This well-attended gathering was one such event. The dinner was preceded by an overview introductory explanation by Dr. Nuray Yurt, President of PII New Jersey regarding Muslim beliefs and included a power point presentation describing Peace Island and its mission. The predinner program concluded moments before sundown but not until the Muslim evening “call to prayer” was explained and then shared.
Dr. Yurt had explained that during Ramadan, Muslims fast by abstaining from water and food while the sun is out. Iftar – or fast breaking dinners take place each night once the sun sets. As we learned, this is an important time for those who participate in Ramadan because of their faith and because it’s equally important for them to share their tradition with friends from different backgrounds over delicious food and through lively conversation.
This, of course, was accomplished. The food was plentiful, the conversations-enlightening and the music provided by our Music Director Daniel Mullens was nothing less than awe-inspiring.
We’re looking forward to holding future events with their interfaith dining companions and friends

The 2nd annual PCC Diaper Drive was a huge success thanks to your generous donations from all who love moms and babies! We would like to thank everyone at PCC, PCNS and the greater community who contributed. Here is what we collected:
-27 boxes of diapers (1505 to be exact!)
-10 cans of formula
-9 boxes of pea crisps snacks
-4 multigrain cereals
-105 containers of baby food
-misc. baby items
All supplies will be delivered to the Fr. English Center in Paterson! THANK YOU!!!
