Mental Health Month Wrap Up

In May, Chester County celebrated National Mental Health Month in many ways. The observance is a chance to learn and grow in our understanding of mental health and our overall well-being. We want to thank the Arc of Chester County for focusing on mental health at the annual Legislative Breakfast, and to the Chester County Library in Exton for the month-long book display. Thanks to our schools and the student-driven organization, Aevidum for their mental health awareness projects. Congratulations to Chester County's core mental health providers that recognized Mental Health Month with fun and engaging events for their communities and program participants. We also thank our agency and community partners, such as Viking Fitness, featured in the article below.
Fitness for Our Whole Health

Alex Osburn and Brittany Usher want to bridge the gap between mental health and fitness. With their Viking Fitness facility in West Chester, the couple offers a safe, comfortable, non-threatening environment for anyone wanting a place to train to reach their wellness goals. During National Mental Health Month they held a free open house for mental health providers, staff and individuals in recovery. The day long event offered varied workouts and the opportunity to try equipment, as well as information on the basics of fitness and benefits of exercise.

Nick DeSantis, the manager of Crossroads Recovery Center in West Chester, was one of the participants at the open house. "It was an environment of health and wellness, a caring of each self and each other. There was equality among us all despite how many lbs. we could lift or how much stamina we had. It was a good time, and the atmosphere was fun and very enjoyable," he said of the event.

What is a Holistic Approach?

People define holistic health in different ways. The American Holistic Health Association (AHHA) notes that our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being depend on all of these aspects to maintain whole health. When one part of our health is disrupted, other parts suffer. The concept is referred to as a whole person, or holistic approach to wellness. A wellness resource for decades, AHHA is a free online clearinghouse dedicated to empowering individuals to enhance their health and quality of life. Visit their site at this link.

June is LGBTQ Pride Month

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month (LGBT Pride Month) is celebrated annually in June to honor the 1969 Stonewall riots, and works to achieve equal justice and equal opportunity for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) Americans. In June of 1969, patrons and supporters of the Stonewall Inn in New York City staged an uprising to resist the police harassment and persecution to which LGBT Americans were commonly subjected. This uprising marks the beginning of a movement to outlaw discriminatory laws and practices against LGBT Americans.
