   Twenty-Sixth Sunday After Pentecost
November 18 & 25, 2018

Our Core Values:
Spiritual Growth. Welcome. Justice-seeking

We had a wonderful presentation from Veterans: Jim Maddox, Anderson Pollard and Rev. Leo Lynch after church on Sunday.

Reflection for Worship. . .

Who's Listening?
I Samuel 1:4-20

In our text for worship this week Hannah pleads with God for a son and her suffering is misinterpreted by both her husband and a temple priest Eli.  In a reflection entitled "Who's Listening?" we will reflect on how our suffering and struggle may go unnoticed or be misread by even those who are closest to us.  There is pain in the world around us, and as we pack and move to a new location for our church, we may find we have our own share of feelings and challenges.  The story of Hannah will offer us some support as we manage our own journeys - can we ask God for small and large concerns - is it faithful to ask for what we want, or even faithful to have a "needs" list - how much should we depend upon God for healing and a way forward?  Join us in the Sanctuary for worship this Sunday, welcome our friends the Tradical Brothers and stay afterwards for our Thanksgiving Luncheon at noon.

Rev. John H Pomeroy

This Touchstone will be for two Sundays, Nov. 18th & 25th. The office will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday Thursday and Friday Nov. 22 and 23. We hope you have a safe and happy holiday.

Also This Week -

In this week's service we look forward to hearing the traditional Irish music of The Tradical Bros.  Come early to the sanctuary to hear their gathering tunes.  Hope to see you there!

This Sunday we will have our In-Gathering of Pledges for 2019. Please bring your pledge cards that should have come to you in the mail this week. There are two cards - one to offer your time to the life of the church and the other to offer your financial commitment to FCC for the coming year.

Many thanks to the Stewardship Witnesses who have shared why they give of their time and talents to the church. Our Witness on Sunday is Jeff Tyler.

Stewardship Reflection by Wesly Moore:

I have a different perspective on giving this year.  As many of you know, my mother has been facing a lot of challenges in her life lately.  I'm spending a lot more time with her, interacting with her caregivers, doing care myself, shopping, bringing her meals, other errands.  This has wrought havoc in my life and unavoidably pulled me away from some things, including to some extent my participation in the life of our congregation.

These increased demands on my time mean that I've had to cut back on not just committee and other "extra-curricular" involvements, but often my time in worship as well.  Similarly increased demands on my finances have left me falling behind on my pledge commitment. This feels awkward and unhappy to me, because I receive support from this congregation and I want to offer my faithful support in return.

But guess what?  My congregation is still there for me, despite my decreased financial giving, no worries that I'm not on three or four committees, never mind that I'm not in worship every Sunday.  Pastor Marlene still visits my mother regularly; I know that many of you include us in your prayers; and I receive emails, phone calls, and other, more concrete expressions of care.  The Body of Christ is not a country club where you have to pay your dues or you may not participate. Life has been hard for me in 2018, but the experience has reinforced for me that I am part of the right faith community.  Chances are, if you're reading this, so are you!

These are exciting times for our congregation, and we are at a true turning point.  We now have the opportunity to grow and reinvent our community in new ways that we simply couldn't imagine before.  This will be both more rewarding and more work than we may be able to imagine. We cannot take on this challenge empty-handed.

What shall we bring?  Whatever we can. What shall we bring?  Anything we can. What shall we bring? Everything we can!  No one of us can do it alone...but all of us can do it together!

Our Transition Continues

Many thanks to staff and church members that continue to discern, sort, and help pack items as we prepare to move to our new temporary home at the First United Methodist Church on 500 East Colorado here in Pasadena.

We have had several meetings with the new owner of our current building and now have a timeline of when we need to leave our building. Pastor Marlene and our Building Manager Sallie are coordinating and working with those who have agreed to do some of the sorting and decision-making. If you would like to help out some of the folks who are sorting and/or packing, please let Marlene or Sallie know. Please send any request for an item of furniture or decoration in the church directly to Sallie and she will consider whether the item is available. We will need to buy a few pieces of furniture for the new offices so if you wish to make a small donation for an item, we will put it in the new office fund!

Roberta White and Sue Miele have carefully looked over the furniture and items in the parlors, chapel, kitchen, narthex and sanctuary during this past week.

We need to leave our church nursery and our Co-Pastor's office by the end of the day on Dec. 26th. Large portions of our building will be leased by the Providence Christian College and they will be renovating and moving in during late December and early January. Pastors Marlene and Jake will make their office available starting Dec. 27th. Our nursery will be shifted to the youth room from Dec. 30th through the month of January. Our church school children will be meeting in Nina's office area between Christmas and the end of January.

Two Tours Planned for our new interim church home

Save the dates of Sunday Nov. 25th and Sunday Dec. 16th for a group tour of the First United Methodist church just two blocks away on Colorado Blvd. We will head over around 11:50  after worship/coffee hour to have a tour of our new worship space and offices. More info to come - plan to come and see our new space on either date!

On Sunday our church celebrates Thanksgiving with our church community. Following worship and coffee time, there will be a complete turkey dinner, served in our church parlors. Judi Tyler will be doing a Thanksgiving craft for the children in the east parlor after they eat, so parents can continue socializing. Please join us; there will be good food and friendship for everyone.

Rose Bowls Tickets and Pancake Breakfast at
First United Methodist Church New Year Day

On New Year's Day our new home at FUMC has offered us reserved seats in front of their church (chairs set up between the sidewalk and Colorado) for $25 each. We have 40 seats set aside for us. Please let Pastor Marlene in writing - either email or a note on Sunday - if you would like a ticket. Please give her a check made out to FCC Pasadena marked "Rose Bowl Parade." The deadline is Dec. 15th to reserve a seat.

FUMC makes a pancake breakfast each year. If you would like to help cook, let Pastor Marlene know. They set up and cook VERY EARLY, but there is also a lot of fellowship. You may also cook and then head outside to watch the parade. Pancake breakfast cost is around $9.95 and you pay at the door. There is also access to bathrooms!!

Youth Outreach Work and Confirmation

Here are our pictures of our hard working and fun morning together doing the work God calls us to do! Thanks to our adults and youth for helping out.

Other upcoming projects will include:, putting together care packages for Ronald McDonald House, sponsoring a family for Christmas through Friends in Deed, and visiting members of our church. The Youth Outreach Planning Committee is: Lu Burd, Meagan VanDeventer, Jeff Tyler, Neva Orr and Pastor Marlene.

Also for Youth - Pastor Marlene has reached out to parents of all 7th-12th graders this week about their interest in a Confirmation Class. Confirmation is a time for young people to learn about the traditions of the Church and God/Jesus/Holy Spirit, explore their faith, and determine if they would like to be confirmed. If at least three youth respond favorably, we will set a time for an initial meeting. Parents may also be in touch with Marlene with any questions. Pastor Marlene will also be recruiting adult partners for our youth in this process of faith development.
