A Message from the Principal
On this last day of the academic year, it is important to take a moment to thank you for an outstanding year. We have enjoyed the presence of your children in our building and are grateful for your partnership in the ministry of their education.

The last two weeks have included several end-of-year transitions. Most notably, we graduated 104 young men and women ready to begin the next chapter of their lives. We are proud of their achievements, including the record breaking 13 million dollars in earned scholarship offers, and their leadership in academics, athletics, music, the arts, and so much more.

Yesterday, the faculty and staff gathered for an end-of-the-year luncheon where we acknowledged those among us who are retiring or moving on to a new chapter in life.

Mrs. Christine Mattiko and  Mrs. Alison Langione  served as middle school science teachers this last year. We wish each of them well as they pursue other career endeavors next year.

2019 Retirees
Irene Woodard & Pat Lichty
Mrs. Irene Woodard , YC Religion teacher for 16 years, and former moderator of multiple activities including the annual Junior Ring Ceremony and our after-school Country Meadows volunteer team is retiring. Mrs. Woodard is looking forward to spending time with her family and enjoying traveling, including a trip to the Holy Land this summer. We are grateful for her years of service.

Mrs. Pat Lichty  has taught in the Diocese of Harrisburg for a combined total of 22 years including 16 years at York Catholic and is also retiring. One of her most fond moments at York Catholic is the creation of the Holocaust elective course, which she will continue to teach as a volunteer in her retirement. She is also looking forward to time with family and traveling.

Father Jonathan Sawicki  is moving to Harrisburg in the month ahead, where he will serve as the new Diocesan Director of Vocations. For the last seven years, Father Sawicki has served as the Pastor of St. Mary's Parish, Dean of the York Deanery to the Diocese of Harrisburg, Pastoral Chairman of the York Catholic School Board, and the York Catholic Chaplain. While those titles naturally come with a great deal of respect and authority, it is his witness to the faith and service to the faithful at his parish and in our school community that truly define who Father Jon has been for all of us and why we share a collective love and respect for him. He has spent countless hours in our halls and classrooms, on our fields and courts, in our homes for family gatherings and pre-game dinners, and he has celebrated family baptisms, funerals, and everything in between for many of us. He truly has been a father for our YC family and the greater community during these last seven years.

We spent our last few hours as a school community today collecting any last-minute books and Chromebooks from our students and emptying our senior high hallway classrooms in preparation for a summer of construction. We are grateful to the School Board leaders for allowing the vision of a renovated building to come to fruition and look forward to new classrooms with air conditioning and a facelift, as well as a turf field and elevator next school year. In the meantime, we wish our students well as they spend time with family this summer. May God be with each of them and provide for a renewed spirit when we return to school after Labor Day.

Again, we thank you for your partnership in the education of your children and wish everyone a safe, happy, and healthy summer!

Sincerely,

Katie Seufert '96

Did you know that York Catholic graduates are college and career ready? The Class of 2019 has 92% of students who are continuing on to higher education. An additional 3% are going into military service, while 5% are going directly into the workforce. Over $13 million in college scholarships were awarded with 71% earning scholarships.

The current students who are enrolled in York Catholic are just as impressive. The quality education we are able to offer to our students is because of alumni, parents, and community members like yourselves. Your help supports YC's long tradition of a values-based education that guides our students to develop personal integrity, make good choices, and serve the greater good in their own communities and beyond.

As our school's fiscal year end quickly approaches, we ask you to prayerfully consider giving to our York Catholic Fund. This fund not only supports every student by enriching extra-curricular programs and music and the arts, but also provides professional development for teachers, academic program support, athletic programs, technology, special projects, and covers operating expenditures. This year, we have a fundraising goal of $300,000 by June 30, 2019.

Every gift, whatever the amount, counts and is truly valued. Please use the return envelope that was included in your Spring issue of Greensleeves or click here to use our online donation page.

As always, thank you for your continued support of YC!

Parents of Current Juniors
This spring, Juniors (now rising Seniors!) met with Mrs. Phillips to generate college, technical school, and military searches through the CollegeBoard website. This summer is an ideal time to visit schools of interest and begin the application process. Please be attentive to each college's checklist of required documents and give yourself ample time to request and submit the information. Students can email Mrs. Phillips this summer with any questions at [email protected] .

Summer hours are flexible; please adhere to the 2 week minimum request for transcripts. These requests should be submitted to the Main Office, attention Mrs. Gick. Transcript Request Forms are available on the website in the Forms & Documents section. Please note that addressed envelopes, stamps, and fee(s) should accompany the requests. The first transcript is free, additional requests are $3 each. If you are uncertain if you have requested a transcript in previous years, you may email Mrs. Gick at [email protected]  for that information. If letters of recommendation are to be mailed with the transcript please indicate this in the area provided on the form. Include summer contact information on the form in the event of questions or clarifications.
Summer Assignments
Reading
York Catholic High School views the development of life-long habits of reading as a hallmark of an educated individual, and it encourages each student to read widely throughout the year.  The school also recognizes the value of on-going academic engagement during the summer months.  Summer reading and other intellectual activities serve to stimulate, to enrich, and to reinforce academic skills during the summer hiatus.  Each current student has received information regarding summer reading.  The assignments are also available on the home page of the YC website at  www.yorkcatholic.org   in the Announcements section, titled, "Summer Assignments," and on the Forms & Documents page.  Each grade level's requirements are clearly explained and reading responses are due on or before Friday, September 6

Math
Keeping students' math skills strong during the summer months helps to avoid the "summer slide" and aids in less review time when school resumes. Students should complete their online Summer Math Assignments on or before Friday, September 6. The assignments are available on the home page of the YC website at  www.yorkcatholic.org   in the Announcements section, titled, "Summer Assignments," and on the Forms & Documents page.
Student Medical Requirements for 2019-20
Immunizations Needed
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has established school immunization requirements for all students. The regulations are intended to ensure that children attending school in PA are adequately protected against potential outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases. A child must have the required medically-appropriate vaccines or a plan to complete those vaccines or risk exclusion from school.

Children in grades 7-12 need the following immunizations for attendance:
  • 4 doses of tetanus * (1 dose on or after 4th birthday)
  • 4 doses of diphtheria* (1 dose on or after 4th birthday)
  • 4 doses of acellular pertussis* (1 dose on or after 4th birthday)
  • 4 doses of polio (4th dose on or after 4th birthday and at least 6 months after previous dose given)
  • 2 doses of measles, mumps, and rubella (usually given as MMR)
  • 3 doses of hepatitis B
  • 2 doses of varicella (chickenpox) or evidence of immunity
  • 2 doses meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV)
    • 1st dose is given 11-15 years of age; a 2nd dose is required at age 16 or entry into 12th grade.
    • If the dose was given at 16 years of age or older, only one dose is required.
  • 1 dose of tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis (Tdap) - age 11 or older
                                    *   Usually given as DTaP or DTP or DT or Td

If you submitted doctor's documentation of the administration of these vaccines previously, you do not need to repeat this step unless an additional booster or immunization is needed or has been given in the past year. (Students entering grades 10, 11, & 12 - please note the dose requirements for the MCV vaccine.) All new students must submit doctor's documentation of the dates the above doses were administered to the York Catholic nurse by August 23, 2019. If any of the required immunizations will not be given by August 23, please click here for the PLAN form to detail the dates the immunizations are scheduled to be given.

Under Pennsylvania state law, students without the required immunizations or a plan with scheduled dates of administration on file, cannot be admitted to school.
