This Week at BJBE
November 19,  2018
A Note from Sally Sachar, Executive Director

Greetings Congregants,

As we ready to offer gratitude and celebrating giving thanks this Thursday, we want to highlight two opportunities for Tzedakah - both compelling and timely ways to give back to help those deeply in need. The fires that are still burning in California have directly impacted many residents with devastating losses, including within Congregation Or Ami in Calabasas.  BJBE, the JLC, and Sisterhood are collecting gift cards to be sent to Congregation Or Ami for distribution to their affected congregants. You can drop these cards in the Tzedakah box in the Village Center, or during weekdays you may bring these to the BJBE office.

Also, consider donating to JUF's fund for the Pittsburgh community affected by the Tree of Life shooting. The money raised will fund psychological services, support for families, medical bills for all those involved, reconstruction, and security. To donate, click here.

In addition, please look tomorrow for information on BJBE's campaign for  Giving Tuesday on November 27th. Giving Tuesday is an international day of giving and is always the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. This is a chance to give back to those organizations that do so much for our communities and that matter most to you. We hope you will consider contributing to BJBE. We've set a goal of $5,000 for this campaign and all contributions will be matched dollar for dollar by an anonymous donor (that means that if you donate $100, our donor will also contribute $100, for a total of a $200 donation!). Watch our Facebook page for videos from our congregants on how BJBE has made on impact on their lives.

On the security front, we want to call your attention to a few matters:
  • JLC families should have received a detailed email from me and Missy Bell (Director of Education) about parking and traffic flow. Please click here to read the email if you missed it last week. We understand that parking further back on the Rochelle Zell Jewish High School lot may be less convenient for you, but we need to be fully responsive to the high school staff's requests in terms of where we park BJBE cars.
  • We have extended the time window each day that your key cards will work.  Your key cards will work from 7:15 am to 9:35 pm. Minyan members have access from 6:30 am to 9:35 pm.
  • You are doing great at getting your key cards. If you have friends and family members who are congregants who have NOT picked up their cards, please encourage them to do so. (we realize not everyone reads This Week - as sad as that makes us -  so we need to promote the cards through other channels).
Finally, we hope you had a chance to look at our newest e-publication,  ChaiLights , launched last Friday. If you missed it, click here

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

SOCIAL ACTION NETWORK

November Tzedakah-  Help Those Affected by the California Fires and the Tree of Life Shooting in Pittsburgh

Gift Cards for those affected by the California Fires. Gift cards from Target, Trader Joe's, Ralph's (they accept gift cards from Mariano's), and Visa/Amex are being collected to support the Jewish community and those affected by the fires. Cards can be deposited in the Tzedakah Box or brought into the BJBE Office during business hours or when school is in session.

JUF's collection for Pittsburgh.  The money will fund psychological services, support for families, medical bills for all those involved, reconstruction, and security. The local Jewish day schools in the Pittsburgh area will also most likely require additional resources to help children process this tragedy.

Project Nourish-Thanksgiving Event
Thank you to all of you who generously donated to the Bob Terry Project Nourish Fund to help pay for the Thanksgiving lunch that was lovingly prepared by the sisters of the Bethlehem Healing Temple, the church where we distribute our Project Nourish lunches. Also, our "Socks in the Box" drive was successful and combined with other donations, we were able to collect enough for 225 gift bags; each containing 4 pairs of socks and a winter accessory. The people who live near the church were so happy to receive this beautiful meal as well as the needed winter items.Thank you!
