Dear School of St. Mary Parents,
This week our 2nd grade students participated in a family prayer service on Monday. The entire 2nd grade year serves as an initiation to the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. Our candle lighting service links our students with Jesus, whom they will receive in Holy Communion this spring. What an appropriate celebration as Jesus is the light of our world. Father Nacius connected our actions as followers of Christ to the actions of Jesus. He encouraged our students to go out into the world as lights of Christ in the way they treat and respect one another. Each student received a special candle at the Prayer Service as a symbol of all they are doing to prepare themselves for their First Holy Communion.
Our School of St. Mary Fall Athletic Seasons came to a close last weekend. All of our student-athletes and coaches demonstrated tremendous growth, sportsmanship and success this year.
Our Girls Volleyball programs, coached by Dr. Maribeth Carlini and Shawn Edwards had tremendous seasons. Our 5th grade team learned much about the game and improved as the season went on. The 6th grade Volleyball Crusaders had a great year as well and closed out their schedule with two strong wins.
Our 7th grade Volleyball Warriors had a near perfect season and played extremely well! Our 8th grade Crusaders Volleyball team had an outstanding year as well and developed tremendously in skill, knowledge of the game and teamwork. Great job ladies and coaches!
While we did not field our own football program this year, a number of our student-athletes played football for both the Lake Forest Junior Scout and the Vaders. Our boys that played for the Junior Scouts grew in skill and experience. The Vaders was made up of players from the combined St. Norbert, Sacred Heart and the former Holy Cross teams. The Vaders won their Championship game against Wilmette Catholic last Sunday at Loyola, in the pouring rain, with a score of 38-0. It was the last middle school football game for School of St. Mary 8th graders Brooks Bahr, Sean Cronin, Brady Goodman, Harry Kotlarz, and James Specketer. Tommy Aberle also played on the Vaders this year and will carry on the tradition next year. Great season boys!
As a former Varsity Basketball Coach and Athletic Director, there are really only two seasons when it comes to any athletic program: In-Season and Off-Season. While our Fall Sports Programs are now officially in off-season mode, the time is now to start planning and preparing for next year. One of our goals for our Athletic Program is to be able to offer our own football program next year here at the School of St. Mary. We need to as a school start planning and preparing for next year now if we want to be able to do this. Not only do we need student support, but we need parent support as well. Encourage your children to get involved and play. Look for advertisements and promotions in the coming months talking about Crusader Football. We will be having a football mini-camp this spring, let students know of football camps in the area and other opportunities to become involved. Sky Zone Teacher of the Month
|
Congratulations to the October Sky Zone teacher of the month. Our very own second grade teacher Ms. Wanner! She was presented with the award on Thursday afternoon in front of students. We are so glad to have her as a part of our Crusader family and know she will continue to do great things for her students.

Flu Season is coming!
Dear Parent,
Due to the high absense level normally seen at this time of year, we would like to give you some guidelines to help with your decision on whether or not to send your child to school. Please be advised if you child has any of the symptoms listed below he/she should not attend school.
1. Fever over 100
2. Rash of unknown origin
3. Sore throat with fever
4. Persistent cough
5. Nausea and vomiting
6. Diarrhea
If your child has recently been ill, please be aware of the following guidelines before having your child return to school:
1. He/she should be feeling fit for 24 hours before returning to school
2. He/she should be
free of a fever for at least 24 hours without the use of medication such a Tylenol or Ibuprofen.
3. He/she should be free of vomiting and diarrhea for at least 24 hours.
4. He/she should be taking an antibiotic for at least 24 hours before returning after being diagnosed with strep throat.
5. He/she should be on a prescription antibiotic eye drops for conjunctivitis for 24 hours before returning to school.
To keep your children healthy, make sure they have plenty of rest and good, nutritious diet. Make sure they are dressed properly when playing out doors. Please notify the school if your child has been diagnosed with strep throat, chickenpox, scarlet fever, flu, etc.
The single most important thing you can do to keep your child free of illness is to teach him/her the proper way to wash his hands. Make sure he/she uses soap and rubs his/her hands together for 15-20 seconds. He/she should then rinse his/her hands in running water and dry them thoroughly.
Please help us keep our children healthy by keeping your child home if ill. Remember, one sick child can spread his/her illness to all of his/her classmates.

Please join us for a fun and special Baby Jesus Birthday party...
At 9:30, we will meet at the Church of St. Mary where Fr. Nacius will read the children the story of Jesus' birth. We will sing a few traditional Christmas carols with the children. Immediately following in the gym, we will decorate treats, color and sing Happy Birthday to Jesus!
All are welcome! Parents and grandparents are encouraged to attend with their children and grandchildren. It will be most appropriate for ages 0-10.

Lake Forest / Lake Bluff Learning Differences Association (LDA)
The Lake Forest / Lake Bluff Learning Differences Association (LDA) met on October 31, and invites you to join us for our monthly meetings. We regularly meet on the last Wednesday of every month at the West Campus of Lake Forest High School from 9:30-10:45.
All parents are welcome to come learn about the many resources, trends and issues our students with learning challenges experience. It is a friendly group that talks with District / school administrators, hears about grant and financial updates and provides support for families. We meet on the second floor of the West Campus of Lake Forest High School on the following days this year: November 28, January 30, February 27, April 24, and May 29.
