The International Board of Directors approved a change to the contest rules for Regional Competitions:
The minimum number of competing members on stage for the International Division will be 12 plus the director.

Annual Regional Evaluation

Each year, Sweet Adelines chapters are asked to provide information about their chorus and evaluate the activities and programs offered by their region. This is your chance to recognize strengths and identify areas for improvement. Your Regional leaders use this feedback to assess how regional education and programming meets the needs and concerns of regional membership.
Presidents/Team Coordinators: You will have received an email from International with a link to a survey. In consultation with your Chapter Board/Team members and other musical leaders, complete ONE survey based on your perceptions of the region during fiscal year 2018-2019.

Quartet registration/renewal time is upon us!
Already singing in a quartet or thinking about starting one? Quartet renewals and new quartet registrations are now open! Existing quartets may renew from May 1-July 31.
Remember, after July 31 your quartet registration will be cancelled, so don't delay!

Barbershop Music Appeciation Day!

Make plans to celebrate!
On July 13, 1945, our founder, Edna Mae Anderson, invited some friends to her home for barbershop singing. We count that day as our organization's birthday. In 2005, on our 60th anniversary, July 13 become known as Barbershop Music Appreciation Day. Can you think of a more fun holiday to celebrate?
Start making plans now to spread the joy of barbershop singing with your community, both in person and online! You might want to hold an informal performance in your community or for your friends. Maybe 4 you'll share a tag challenge or favorite barbershop performance via social media. Or you could bake a cake and sing happy birthday to Sweet Adelines-in four part barbershop harmony, of course!

#SweetAdelinesDay so we can share via the Sweet Adelines social media channels! A toolkit of marketing materials to help you promote Barbershop Music Appreciation Day is currently in the works and will be available in the Marketing Materials section of the website in mid-June. Why the dual names?
Formed in 2016, Balancing Act has competed in Harmony, Inc., placing 6th and 4th at International Competitions. When they found themselves without a lead in early 2019, Aileen Carney joined the group. In addition to the existing base in Harmony Inc., they decided to take advantage of their relationship with Sweet Adelines and compete within both organizations. Since the name Balancing Act was already taken in SAI, they chose the name Counter Balance.
On May 18, these talented ladies competed in Region 1 (Springfield, MA). We are very proud to announce that Counter Balance placed 5th in the contest out of 23 competitors!
A group of CSC members learned the National Anthem of Norway (in Norwegian), and had the honour of singing it at the Ambassador's Ottawa residence for Norway's National Day! What a suave looking group!

We have had such a busy year! Contest preparation and coaching from January to April got us ready for a very rewarding Regional contest. We are thrilled to be Region 16's Division A Champions, and to have placed 4th overall. It was exhilarating! We took five new members on stage, two of which were brand new to Sweet Adelines! It was also Hannah's solo directing debut!
Since coming back from competition we have been very busy. Contest review, our AGM and installation set up a pathway for the year ahead. With our new Management Team members installed, we awarded our Sweet Adeline of the Year to Lori Johnston! We've been given new music and on May 28, concluded our 5-week free voice lessons to our community. Starting on April 30, we welcomed more than a dozen friends from our local community to learn about their voice, Sweet Adelines, the chorus, and of course learn some songs with us. Last night we hosted a mini-concert where our community friends got to experience the stage and an audience. They performed their hearts out! It was a blast and we concluded the evening with light refreshments and treats!
In June we are back to regularly-scheduled rehearsals and a coaching session on June 18 with Diane Porsch! We decided to carry on practicing through the summer, looking for performance opportunities, learning new repertoire and improving our vocal skills. Our Director will be attending the Directors and Visual Leaders Seminar in August so there's no doubt she will have new skills and techniques to share when she returns!

nother contest season has come and gone. We have three brand new Sweet Adelines this year and we're so grateful to have taken our two new tenors to contest with us. Welcome, Sara and Virginia (shown here).
Hopefully, Chloé our YWIH, will have the time off to join us next year. Joining us for the first time is Leslie McNeil and returning to our risers is Pam Malinowski
We have welcomed in our new board of directors and prepare for our AGM at the end of the month. Lots of planning for the 2019-2020 year which is our 25th Anniversary! Stay tuned for information on our celebration being held on November 16th!

We had several participants in this years Komedy Kwartet, hosted by Pineridge Chorus in Uxbridge. Several chorus members put on their best vamp in Hard Hearted Hannah. Our mother/daughter team joined by dad/brother gave an example of mixed quartering and how families sound great together. Not to be outdone, mom/dad joined with friends in another example of mixed quartets. Lastly, the Mad Housewives of Durham Shores gave a warning to husbands not to leave their wives alone too many nights. Thank you to S.L.A.M.! for their expert judging.

 After our recent contest in Syracuse, where we were awarded Most-Improved Chorus, and received 3rd-
 place Division A medals, we had to refocus and get ready for our annual Spring Fling Fashion Show. This year was our 19th annual show, and we offered fashions from three different shops in Collingwood and area. We moved our venue from Thornbury to Collingwood this year with
awesome results. We
had 210 people attend, and had a blast singing, modeling, serving our decadent desserts, and visiting
with lots of old friends. Of a show of hands among the audience, more than half were first-time at
tendees, a fact we attribute to hosting it in Collingwood. We were blown away with the support we received and all the positive comments.
We are now gearing up for singing the national anthem at a meeting of the Ontario Association of Engineering Technicians
and Technologists, and then working hard to learn several new songs over the summer. We do take a 4 week break, but we'll be busy when we get back in August to get ready for our fall membership drive.
During the summer break, we do a couple of social outings, one of which will be a mini-golf tournament. We have a lot of fun forming teams, and coming up with a name and costume for our individual team. Great prizes are up for grabs!
Harmony North wishes everyone a great summer season. And we are really looking forward to going to next year's contest in St. Catharines. Yay!!!

Circle of Harmony and we are keeping cool before our summer break in July learning a bunch of new Christmas songs for our show on November 16, 2019.

Each month, we honour a different chorus member who does a little something extra for our chorus. Colleen Julseth, our May winner, chose Elaine Baylock for the month of June, citing her as a kind and generous spirit who always has a beautiful smile on her face. Elaine will wear a special pin for the month and take care of the Circle of Harmony's mascot, Adeline, for the month of June. Congratulations Elaine!

It's spring...and there is a lot of newness in the air.
Spread the news all around. It's official. We have accepted our invitation to Harmony Classics Div. AA, SA International 2020. We have worked hard! We have supported each other! We have had exceptional leadership from our Master Director, Martha DeClerq, our Assistant Director, Heather Deslauriers-McCuaig, our music team and our inspiring coaches. We are honoured and excited for the upcoming challenge and opportunity. Louisville here we come!
On April 30, York Harmony Chorus
celebrated our Installation. We enjoyed an evening of reflecting on our past, the present and our future. We have come a long way since 1974 when
York Highlands Chorus
(our original name
) first began. In keeping with our
"
magical
"
theme, our hosts (the right-side-of-the-riser Leads) created a "Magic Carpet Ride" evening, which fittingly helped us highlight our journey, inspiring us to focus on exciting opportunities, greater challenges and solid goals. Carol Richard and Erin McDonald were superb as our animated emcees. Great job, ladies!
Some of the highlights from the night included performances from the award-winning quartet, S.L.A.M.!, as well as two newer quartets, Sangria and On Track. These ladies are fabulously talented. We are looking forward to cheering them on in the future. It's very inspiring.
Along with acknowledging our Management Team, our longstanding members of Sweet Adelines
International/York Harmony Chorus were presented their longevity pins. Recipients included, Anne Leitch (40 years), Pat Crawford (35 years), Marie Abel and Liz DiPasquale (30 years), Jill Gillespie (25 years) and Cheri Ingles (20 years), just to name a few. We applaud all of these fabulous ladies. They are truly committed Sweet Adelines, a superior organization providing a life-long love for sisterhood, learning,
performing and personal growth. We are so proud to have these dedicated and well-rooted ladies as part of York Harmony Chorus.
We are always up for supporting our fellow choruses and sisters in harmony. Many YHC chorus members attended the "Komedy Kwartet" evening hosted by Pineridge Chorus in Uxbridge. It was a hilarious night of entertainment! They did an amazing job. It was an enjoyable evening with great door prizes, 50/50 draws, quite an assortment of food and purely funny MC'ing by the talented Rob Snoulton.
Lastly, on June 1, members from YHC volunteered at a Colour Run for a non-profit organization called Shine Through The Rain. It was a beautiful day to be part of something very inspiring and motivating. It was a great, colourful day.
