LHC By the Way...
JUNE 2019

PASTOR'S MESSAGE
REV. RICHARD E. MALMBERG

Friends,

Are you willing to spy for your church?

I am not suggesting anything diabolical. Really. This is more along the lines of the spies Moses dispatched at God’s command in Numbers 13, to scope out the land of Canaan. Some translations call them scouts . Some call them spies . Whatever works for you, whichever is more palatable or romantic. Go with it. We want to see and consider how other churches do things. Central to who we are and what we do is worship. It is part of our common life every week.
While we have all become used to many of our worship traditions, there may be some ideas being employed at other churches that make sense for us to try. I know many of you will travel around the country during the summer months. Many of you will attend worship with friends and family in other places. If you experience something that might be of interest to us, please let us know. Perhaps the simplest way to do that is to bring home a worship bulletin from a service you attended. Perhaps you might jot a few notes down on the bulletin itself. Then, just drop the bulletin off at the church office and I will keep them together. Hopefully, by September we will have a sizable collection of varied ideas. I wish you all a restful summer filled with stimulating and inspiring travels and activities

Yours in Christ, Pastor Richard Connect with Richard

MUSIC NOTES
SUMMERTIME
Summer is approaching so I bid farewell to the choir from June 9 to early September. I am grateful for their dedication and commitment to worship at our church. Summer is a time to share your talents with special music for the anthem spot or the offertory and remember to start looking for those favorite hymns to sing as well. I am looking forward to surfing for new music for the coming year and worship. Please feel free to pass along any ideas you may have.

BOY ERASED
Jared Eamons, the son of a small-town Baptist pastor, must overcome the fallout after being outed as gay to his parents. His father and mother struggle to reconcile their love for their son with their beliefs. Fearing a loss of family, friends and community, Jared is pressured into attending a conversion therapy program. While there, Jared comes into conflict with its leader and begins his journey to finding his own voice and accepting his true self. This movie stars Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe and Lucas Hodges .

Join us in the pastor's office...we'll bring the popcorn.
The group will meet at 6 pm at Portillos on Rt. 64 in St. Charles for dinner beforehand and they invite you to join them.

A BOOK & A PRAYER
3RD THURSDAY OF THE MONTH, 7 PM
June 20 MEETING - A Terrorist's Son by Zak Ebrahim
An extraordinary story, never before told: The intimate, behind-the-scenes life of an American boy raised by his terrorist father—the man who planned the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. What is it like to grow up with a terrorist in your home? Zak Ebrahim was only seven years old when, on November 5, 1990,
his father El-Sayyid Nosair shot and killed the leader of the Jewish Defense League. While in prison, Nosair helped plan the bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993. For Zak Ebrahim, a childhood amongst terrorism was all he knew. After his father’s incarceration, his family moved often, and as the perpetual new kid in class, he faced constant teasing and exclusion. Yet, though his radicalized father and uncles modeled fanatical beliefs, to Ebrahim something never felt right. To the shy, awkward boy, something about the hateful feelings just felt unnatural. In this book, Ebrahim dispels the myth that terrorism is a foregone conclusion for people trained to hate. Based on his own remarkable journey, he shows that hate is always a choice—but so is tolerance. Though Ebrahim was subjected to a violent, intolerant ideology throughout his childhood, he did not become radicalized. He argues that people conditioned to be terrorists are actually well positioned to combat terrorism, because of their ability to bring seemingly incompatible ideologies together in conversation and advocate in the fight for peace. Ebrahim argues that everyone, regardless of their upbringing or circumstances, can learn to tap into their inherent empathy and embrace tolerance over hatred. His original, urgent message is fresh, groundbreaking, and essential to the current discussion about terrorism.
Consider joining the book group for discussion, fellowship…and snacks! There is always room for one more. The group meets at the home of Sandy Harper, 30W680 Smith Road, Wayne.

HELP STRENGTHEN THE UCC CHURCH
Strengthen the Church (STC) is one of the five special United Church of Christ (UCC) offerings collected during the church year. STC funds are used to enhance, re-imagine, and build the future of Christ's church by supporting youth ministries and full-time leaders in parts of the country where the UCC message and voice has not been heard. STC funds will also be used to award grants to help congregations communicate "God is still speaking" initiatives.

June 9 is the Sunday designated for this special offering. Please look for the special offering in your church bulletin and give as you are able.

FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE
QUEEN OF HEARTS RAFFLE

Look for a letter in the mail from our LHC Fundraising Committee about a creative proposal to raise funds—the 'Queen of Hearts' raffle. This idea was presented at last Sunday's 'Junual' Congregational Meeting, discussed, and endorsed. However it was decided to give the entire congregation an opportunity to express their opinions before the Council votes on the proposal next week. The raffle is planned to take place over the next six months and conducted at an off-site location in St. Charles. LHC will share 50% of the proceeds collected with the raffle winner. This proven successful fundraiser is also an opportunity to reach our wider community to support LHC local charities while building awareness of our church and the groups we help.

Please review the detailed letter when it arrives in the next day or two, and provide comments and questions to Chip Braulick, Moderator ( erbraulick@aol.com or 630-759-1747) or Karen Kaluzsa, Moderator Elect ( kkaluzsa@gmail.com or 773-988-2673). Feedback will be presented anonymously at the Tuesday, June 11 Council meeting for additional discussion before voting on the proposal.
