The Hope of New Life, Given For You
|
Hope is love-unconditional, ever present and given for you and me by God through Jesus and the Cross we all approach this Lent. Beloveds, hope overcomes despair for all God's people: this is the message of the readings appointed for this Sunday.
- The hope of new life is evident in the story of "dry bones" from Ezekiel. The children of Israel declare their hope is lost. The prophet's experience in the valley of dry bones inspires him to preach renewed hope to the people.
- Psalm 130 sings of hope in God and God's word.
- The work of God's Spirit gives hope of new life in Paul's letter to the church at Rome.
- The Gospel of John tells the hope-filled story of the raising of Lazarus from the dead.
The gospel gives us encouraging words to sustain us through the approaching despair of Christ's passion and brings us to the fulfillment of hope on Easter. Martha's wistful words to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here. . . . But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask of him" (John 11:21-22), reflect the hope of God's people in the face of despair, even in the face of death.
Each text encourages hearers to hope in God and God's word. How do we in the Jesus Movement experience unfulfilled hope (especially during this time of pandemic? Israel's woes are not at an end; other psalms tell of struggle and pain; the Christ-believers at Rome are persecuted; Jesus who raises Lazarus from the dead soon dies. And yet hope is fulfilled as Paul proclaims "all Israel will be saved" (Rom. 11:26). Psalm 46 sings of God's presence in time of trouble.
Beloveds, this preview of the hope of the resurrection is good news that will sustain us in these final days of Lent (John 20:17) in the midst of COVID-19. As followers of Jesus, confidence in the resurrection of the dead epitomizes the hope saints and sinners across time and space have in Jesus the Christ. [Sundays and Seasons, 2020]

Sunday Collect
Almighty God, you alone can bring into order the unruly wills and affections of sinners: Grant your people grace to love what you command and desire what you promise; that, among the swift and varied changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

From The Music Corner
|
In this week and for the foreseeable future, Pastor Bill, Ralph and I are looking for ways to bless our community with music through technology. For our beloved church family, we are hoping you will enjoy seeing and hearing some selections from past recordings that Ralph has done so excellently. We will "bundle" 5 to 10 minutes of a prelude or postlude, a processional hymn (with inserted text so you can sing along :0), and a choir anthem -- all appropriate to the upcoming Sunday in our liturgical year.
This week you will hear a prelude on "O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing", and then be able to see and sing with the video as we use that same hymn for the processional hymn. The choir will sing a lovely anthem entitled "All we like sheep have gone astray", which fits so well the Lenten road we are walking. (You will note 2 beloved parishioners in the choir who are now singing God's praises in His Presence). Can we encourage you to listen and be blessed, possibly on Sunday mornings before or after Pastor Bill leads us in worship and a sermon on Facebook Live?
This can also be found on our All Saints website Service Links , along with a full service (from Year A, 3 years ago), and Pastor Bill's upcoming and current sermon/readings and prayers (this will get posted later on Sundays). View anytime you choose -- and may our Lord Jesus keep your heart singing in a very dark time.
A short history on the hymn "O For A Thousand Tongues To Sing" --
This hymn was penned by Britain's Charles Wesley in the mid-1700's. Charles had a dramatic conversion to Christ, which utterly changed him, impacted his preaching and personal habits, and led him to reach out to others in self-sacrificing ways.
"He found a fruitful arena for ministry at the infamous Newgate Prison, and allowed himself to be locked up with condemned men on nights before their executions, that he might comfort and witness to them in their final hours." (Then Sings My Soul, Robert J. Morgan, p. 47)
On the first anniversary of his conversion, Charles wrote an 18-stanza hymn entitled
"For the Anniversary Day of One's Conversion", of which the seventh stanza began
"O for a thousand tongues to sing". When his brother John Wesley compiled a Collection of Hymns in 1780, he chose this hymn for the first hymn in the book.
"O for a thousand tongues to sing my great Redeemer's praise.... the glories of my God and King, the triumphs of His grace!"

A Prayer by Sarah Burns
|
We've all been exposed.
Not necessarily to the virus
(maybe...who even knows)
We've all been exposed BY the virus.
Corona is exposing us. Exposing our weak sides. Exposing our dark sides. Exposing what normally lays far beneath the surface of our souls, hidden by the invisible masks we wear. Now exposed by the paper masks we can't hide far enough behind.
Corona is exposing our addiction to comfort. Our obsession with control. Our compulsion to hoard. Our protection of self.
Corona is peeling back our layers. Tearing down our walls. Revealing our illusions. Leveling our best-laid plans.
Corona is exposing the gods we worship: Our health Our hurry Our sense of security. Our favorite lies Our secret lusts Our misplaced trust.
Corona is calling everything into question: What is the church without a building? What is my worth without an income? How do we plan without certainty? How do we love despite risk?
Corona is exposing me. My mindless numbing My endless scrolling My careless words My fragile nerves.
We've all been exposed. Our junk laid bare. Our fears made known. The band-aid torn. The masquerade done.
So what now? What's left? Clean hands Clear eyes Tender hearts.
What Corona reveals, God can heal.
Come Lord Jesus. Have mercy on us.

Coloring Page 1 Prayer:
Holy God, You are with us from the spinning planets in our sky to the tiniest microbe that lives on the tiniest paw of the tiniest mouse. You care for creation and you care for us. Whether we are out in the world or tucked inside at home, we know that you are as close as the air we breathe. Thank you for being our friend and comforter. Amen.
Coloring Page 2 Prayer:
Into your spacious heart and loving hands, dear God, I place my fears, my "what ifs," my spinning world and mind... Comfort me with the truth no fear is too big for the Great One, who is always with me. I am never alone. Calming God, bring courage. Tender Spirit, breathe peace. Gentle Jesus, be close. Amen
.
Coloring Page 3 Prayer:
God of presence and strength, Help us feel you here with us when we are anxious and afraid, when the future feels unwieldy and uncertain. We know nothing is unknown to you, O God, and we know you are our rock and our comfort in times of trouble. Give us wisdom and courage to make changes that will help things get better. Amen.
