SUPPORTING PETS, EMPOWERING PEOPLE
For so many of us, a home isn't a home without the love of a pet. So to be asked to sacrifice one for the other -- keep your housing but lose your pet, or keep your pet but lose your housing -- is a heartrending dilemma. Such is the scenario for a number of clients of Wisconsin Companion Animal Resources, Education, and Social Services (WisCARES), a veterinary clinic supporting homeless and low-income individuals in Dane County through an outreach partnership of the UW schools of Veterinary Medicine and Social Work.

WARNING SIGNS OF CANCER
November marks National Pet Cancer Awareness Month. Pet owners should be aware of several early warning signs of cancer in animals. These include masses (lumps), especially those that grow quickly, feel firm or change in appearance; persistent vomiting, diarrhea or dramatic weight change; sudden lameness or swelling of the leg; swelling of the abdomen, especially if accompanied by decreased energy or pale gums; or major changes in appetite and energy beyond normal age-related declines. Familiarize yourself with other advice, as well as information on treatment options, from our Oncology Service.

DOGS WITH SKIN INFECTIONS
The Dermatology Service at UW Veterinary Care is recruiting dogs with recurrent pyoderma (three or more episodes of staphylococcal skin infection in the last six months) for a clinical trial investigating the effectiveness of a new staphylococcal vaccine product. This vaccine is intended to prevent recurrent skin infections, helping to alleviate the need for repeated courses of antibiotics. The trial for each dog will last approximately 18 weeks, with visits to UW Veterinary Care every six weeks. Examinations, follow-up visits, diagnostic evaluations, cultures, blood and allergy tests, and medication costs are paid by the study.
