Our Triduum Celebration Continues

All are most welcome to join us in the Cathedral or via the livestreams where available for our liturgies on Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday. Today, Good Friday, we invite you to our Seven Last Words Reflection and our Liturgies of the Lord's Passion, in English and Spanish.

Seating for all liturgies is first-come, first-served, and opening times are noted below. At all times in the Cathedral, masks or face coverings are required and social distancing is observed.

A special note regarding Easter Sunday - please read the schedule carefully as it differs from our normal Sunday schedule.

Please pray for the repose of the souls of Mrs. Sylvia Giese and Msgr. Godfrey Mosley, and remember the sick who have asked for our prayers, especially, Arthur Loyall Kimbrell, Antonio Ponce-Condor, Gloria Harrington, Rick Bell and Bill Largess. Please also keep in prayer all those who will receive the sacraments of initiation and will be welcomed into the Church at our Easter Vigil. Their names are listed below.

Sr. Cynthia Serjak, RSM delivers a Reflection on the Lord's Passion at Noon on Good Friday, April 2, joined by members of St. Matthew's Schola Cantorum, in a Covid adaptation of our traditional commemoration of the Lord’s Passion.

Sr. Cynthia ministers in the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas New Membership Office and also with Mercy Staff Development. She has previously addressed the Cathedral parish at our annual Liturgy Ministry Retreat in October. A long-time pastoral musician, Sr. Cynthia is an organist and composer, and frequently speaks and writes about music, liturgy and spirituality.

Following the Noon Reflection on the Seven Last Words, at 1pm Cardinal Gregory celebrates the Liturgy of the Passion of the Lord. If you plan to join us for the Noon Reflection, you may remain in the Cathedral for the 1pm Liturgy with Cardinal Gregory, or attend both services virtually via the Cathedral livestream.

Bishop Dorsonville joins us in the Cathedral at 4pm, for the Liturgy of the Lord's Passion in Spanish.

On Holy Saturday, April 3 at 8pm, Cardinal Gregory celebrates the Easter Vigil, ranked by the Church as "the mother of all vigils." On this night, we welcome new life into the Body of Christ! Members of the Schola Cantorum accompany the liturgy. Join us in the Cathedral, or via the livestream for this beautiful liturgy at which 16 people will receive the sacraments of initiation and will be welcomed into the Church.

Join us as we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ our Lord and his victory over sin and death! After a long season of Lent, we celebrate that Christ is alive. The Resurrection of Jesus gives us hope for our own share in His Resurrection at the end of our life. Christ is Risen, Alleluia, Alleluia!

Masses for the Resurrection of the Lord will be celebrated as listed below. Please join us in person or via livestream. The Cathedral will open 45 minutes before each Mass and will close immediately after each Mass.

News, Events & Reminders
Good Friday Collection. Pope Francis asks us to support the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, which helps Christians in the Holy Land. Your support helps the church minister in parishes, provide Catholic schools and offer religious education. The collection also helps to preserve the sacred shrines and to provide humanitarian aid to refugees. Read more.

Rectory Holiday on Easter Monday. The rectory office is not staffed on Easter Monday, April 5. Please leave a voice mail at 202-347-3215.

Cathedral Book Club Reads "Helena" by Evelyn Waugh. According to tradition, Helena, the mother of the Emperor Constantine, may have discovered the True Cross! The author himself considered this to be his favorite and most ambitious work. Fr. Hurley leads a discussion of this historical novel by the renowned author on Thursday, April 8 from 7 to 8pm via Zoom. Email Fr. Jack to request the link. Let's get reading!

Earth Day Brown Bag Film-Luncheon. Join St. Matthew's Creation Care Green Team for our brown bag Film-Luncheon. We will watch the award-winning short film, "Forest Man," by William Douglas McMaster, starring Jadav Payeng, the “Forest Man,” and enjoy a good conversation about environmental justice, ecological conversion and change of heart.
