Around the Square                                        June  2019

Summer in the Square means longer days to enjoy all that the season and our vibrant small town have to offer.

Here's the perfect plan for the First Friday of June. First stop: the Kennett Square Farmers Market. Every week, the list of fresh seasonal produce available from our hardworking local growers and producers gets longer and longer, and they bring it all right here, this Friday and every Friday, from 3 to 7 pm. Stock up for the week and then hop across State Street to check out the diverse vendors who bring their vintage and handcrafted items to the First Friday Flea Market (5 to 8:30 pm). Historic Kennett Square's Weekend of the Arts, a curated show and sale featuring the work of over 50 of local and regional artists, opens with a reception in the Michael R. Walker Genesis HealthCare Building at 101 East State Street from 6 to 9 pm. This year's show features a special collector's wall, with affordably priced 12 x 12 pieces perfect for the new or seasoned art enthusiast to build their collection.

Depending on which one of Kennett Square's fantastic restaurants you choose, head to Square Pear Gallery either before or after dinner for the opening of this month's "Into the Deep" show. While you're there at the American Legion Arts Center, enjoy live music from members of the Kennett Symphony, check out Rusty Nelson's new photography gallery, and stop in to see artists Bob Jackson and April Heather as well as  Peter Willard at Trover Nine Studio. Peter, the subject of this month's Meet Our Merchant series, is a friendly, engaging artist who loves to "play with paint" to create fun, thought-provoking, and sometimes surprising work.

On Saturday and/or Sunday morning, fortify yourself with some delicious Colombian coffee and fresh-baked bread or pastries at Kennett Square's newest café, Evergreen Café, Bakery, and Juicery, at Mill Road in Cannery Row. The Weekend of the Arts show at Genesis continues on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday there's a "Save the Bees" event at Kennett Brewing Company and an abstract show featuring local artists at Scarlett Thicket Farm. On Sunday, enjoy the roving, curated Clover Market, with over 80 vendors, live music, and food trucks, from 10 am to 4 pm at 600 South Broad Street. Along with Kennett Brewfest tickets going on sale Friday, June 7th at 10am, all great sources of Father's Day gifts.

Abolitionism and the Underground Railroad are part of the rich history of our area, and the Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday, June 15th, will offer a variety of inspiring and educational family-friendly activities to honor this heritage. The rest of June has plenty of experiences to enjoy as well, including free Wednesday evening concerts at Anson B. Nixon Park and al fresco Third Thursday dining on State Street on June 20th.

As you celebrate summer and the arts in Kennett Square, remember to #loveitlikealocal and support our independent, locally owned small businesses and restaurants. #shopKSQ #deliciousKSQ
