Message from the Executive Director
Now that midterm elections are over we can focus on the task at hand which is preparing for a new gubernatorial administration and identifying key legislation that will affect our members and the practice of health care in New Mexico. GAMA's Board of Trustees, Advocacy and PAC Committees have been meeting regularly to discuss the issues that will surface in the 2019 legislative session beginning January 15th. The list of bills that may be introduced include: medical malpractice, surprise billing, prior authorization, maintenance of certification, scope of practice, cannabis legalization, and a newly revised gross receipts tax bill. Every day new possibilities arise so please watch your inbox for important updates on when bills will be heard and how you can help by contacting your elected officials.
Join your GAMA colleagues on January 8, 2019 for our annual meeting with the installation of new officers and an inspiring presentation on working with refugees by Dr. Sam MacBride.
GAMA's legislative day is set for Thursday, February 7, 2019 in Santa Fe. We have confirmed our speakers and will be contacting the Governor-Elect's office for a meeting with her just as soon as we have her new contact information.
Details for both events are provided in this newsletter, and we will be sending updates just as soon as they are available.

The GAMA Foundation held a kickoff fundraiser on Tuesday, November 13th at the Red Door Brewery. Everyone enjoyed the
camaraderie
and learning about the exciting program ideas the Foundation is planning for the membership. Donations totaled over $3,000 for the evening. Aid in Dying CME Garners Rave Reviews
The newly organized GAMA Foundation recently sponsored a 3-hour CME on Aid in Dying. Over 80 people attended to listen to a diverse group of physicians and legal experts share their experiences and opinions in a neutral forum for learning and discussion.

E. Michael Lewiecki, MD, is named Fellow
of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research
The New Mexico Clinical Research & Osteoporosis Center is pleased to announce that E. Michael Lewiecki, MD, has been elected Fellow of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR).
Dr. Lewiecki is Director of Bone Health TeleECHO at University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, President of the Osteoporosis Foundation of New Mexico, and Vice President of the National Osteoporosis Foundation. He is a consultant in osteoporosis and metabolic bone diseases, clinical researcher for treatments to improve skeletal health, educator, and author of over 280 publications in peer-reviewed journals.
The Fellow of the ASBMR designation recognizes long-term members who have made outstanding contributions to the field of bone and mineral science and have published in the
Journal of Bone and Mineral Research.
Fellows are nominated by their peers, evaluated and selected by a review committee, and approved by the ASBMR Council.
In an interview, Dr. Lewiecki stated, “I am honored to be recognized by my peers and look forward to continuing my work to improve the care of patients with disorders of bone and mineral metabolism.”
