PASTOR'S REFLECTION
Be forewarned. if you are driving in the vicinity of Lansdale, a portion of County Line Road is closed, I presume for construction. Being fairly unfamiliar with the area, I had hoped that the "detour" signs would continue for a certain distance and then direct you back onto County Line. I was mistaken. After stopping for an exceedingly long time at a traffic light, and then running into an equally long delay at a train crossing, I finally realized that there were no further "detour" signs directing me back to my route. Feeling a bit confused, I quickly reached up and pressed the "Go Home" button on my GPS which ALSO seemed confused because it succeeded only in causing me to drive in circles all over Chalfont. Finally looked up and saw a road sign that said, "Bristol Road" and I breathed a sigh of relief. I knew my way home, hallelujah!
However, I really had not been counting on a 45-minute delay and whole lot of frustration and confusion. Poor Carolyn and Virginia - when I finally got to the church office, they had to listen to my sad tale of woe!
I'm a person who likes to plan out every detail of my day. But how often does that really work out?! Not too often, it seems. But still, I persist, because I guess that hope springs eternal. So many things in life don't go according to plan, and sometimes it seems that we encounter one detour after another. While I was driving around Chalfont, I decided that one of the things that stresses me out is my tendency to continue focusing on the goal ("I thought I'd be back at church an hour ago!!") rather than finding a way to enjoy the detour. I had just spent 45 minutes fretting about the fact that the journey was taking much longer than I had expected. Not that I had any pressing reason why I HAD to arrive at the office at a certain time, I just plain wanted to get from Point A to Point B in the shortest time possible. As I looked around, I noticed that I was driving through some beautiful country scenes, and past some interesting crafty-looking shops and markets that I never knew were there. It was a darn shame I had wasted close to an hour stressing and stewing when I could have been enjoying the journey.
And life really IS a journey, isn't it? That's the way God planned it. I'm reminded of an old praise song I've loved for years, it's called "Joy in the Journey" by Michael Card. I need to remember to download it so I can play it whenever I hit a detour!
